[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Sunday, 9 April 2000 Volume 11 : Number 965 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 10:41:25 EDT Subject: [Baren 9198] Kampala Gregory, thank you for the sobering (and as always extremely articulate with the emphasis on "art") words about what's happening over in your neck of the woods. Such a horror to think that it's even possible for human beings to treat each other in this way. The local news in NYC so rarely reports what's going on in other countries, or if they do, it's in a sentence or two - I really appreciate hearing reports about political, etc happenings in other countries, I think people in NYC (in particular the news media) sometimes think that this puny island of Manhattan is the entire universe. best wishes all Sarah ------------------------------ From: Studio Dalwood Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 07:33:33 +1000 Subject: [Baren 9199] Kampala Thankyou Gregory I dont watch or read the news much at all. Way too depressing. All I had heard was Kampala and masacre and little else. For some reason I had the impression it was another of these religious cult mass suicides. If the daily papers were like your description I would not be reading them either. In fact I only read the papers when I need the classifieds for something. Forgive my ignorance. Lets hope that sanity will prevail eventually. Though it makes it hard to think how one could live in the midst of such things and be able to carry on with one's own life as normal. But I guess that's one of the reasons your embassy is there isnt it? To keep an eye on things? Sorry for being so far off woodblocks, Dave. I forgot to give the URl in my last post about the new look website. Its below. [just give me a minute to manually shut my jaw and wipe the drool from my chin]. Lordy, lordy, what a selection of beautiful papers. I could easily bankrupt myself going down the list sampling each sheet. I don't even want to think about the tools in the accompanying catalog. Hmmm... I think I may have join B.A., too!......" Well, yes James. Aiko's is a great place to visit if you are looking for anything in Japanese crafts. Sharen Linder and I have the best of two worlds at our doorsteps. Aiko's and Graphic Chemical....both within a 20 minute ride!!!!! You can spend hours just looking thru the catalogs of those two places... I had both their catalogs at the opening for people to browse thru. Aiko's is a wonderful place not only for printmakers but also for people doing fabrics, japanese paper stencils, sumi painting, etc....all the japanese crafts are so well represented there. They also have a large number of original japanese prints for sale by contemporary artists and a large selection of smaller reproductions of the usual masterpieces by Hokusai, Hiroshige, etc.....when I say repro...I mean these are from new blocks...not machine repros....they are still quite expensive. Chuck Izui who is the current owner bought the business from the original owner ( Aiko) in order to keep the shop/business open. Aiko (now 94 years old) started the business back in the 50's when as an art student she got involved in importing paper from Japan. She is still involved with the business in some ways. Chuck is a very nice young man and knows his papers and woodcutting and spends as much time as needed with each customer. The whole place just radiates with a very classy atmosphere. While visiting there last week he also gave me a handful of paper samples to display at the Baren exhibit. I had brought in David's tools (baren, knives and brushes) to show him....and he was very impressed with them. Then he went in the back and brought out a box for me and another printmaker to see. Inside the box was a beautifully carved woodblock by master Munakata Shiro. Back in 1960 while visiting Chicago, Munakata put on an improptu carving demonstration and the result was this woodblock. Talk about drooling James !!!!! I held this block in my hands for a long long time and looked at each cut as if to absorb the masters touch. The beautifully black inked wood just glowed!!!! One thing that is important when ordering paper from places llike Aiko's, is to let them know what you plan to use the paper for. They have over 60 printmaking papers...just of the white, cream, off white type......and twice as many of colored, special handmade papers. Many are not sized which is very important for what we do. Still, when I ask for strictly white & sized....I had a chice from among 15-20 different types!!!!!!! Anyone interested in more photos of the Skokie exhibit....I will have some scanned in later tonight..... Thanks...Julio ------------------------------ From: news@woodblock.com Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 18:33:47 +0900 Subject: [Baren 9204] NewsFeed April 9, 2000 ************************************************* [Baren] News Feed ... MEMBERS' ACTIVITIES *** Some of you may remember that a few messages relating to autism were posted on [Baren] a while back ... Quite a range of people are reading [Baren], and one thing led to another, and it turns out that because of that communication, the Chileda Autism Institute has asked member Dan Dew if they may use the print of his daughter for some of their brochures and posters. We'll post some image scans once they are available. Congratulations, Dan! *** A TV crew from the 'Discovery Channel' program Artefacts will be visiting Dave Bull's place in Tokyo next week, to film a couple of segments for a program they are doing on ukiyo-e prints. The program isn't 'about' Dave, but is a wide-ranging survey of ukiyo-e, covering historical roots, cultural influences, etc. etc. The one-hour program will be broadcast worldwide, dubbed into local languages. Broadcast date is not yet known, but will be noted here when available. EXCHANGES Exchange #5 is now gathering in prints from the final stragglers ... but one of them - the Skokie Kid - has a pretty good excuse for being a bit late ... Exchange #6 is now under way. It was the first [Baren] exchange that had people banging down the door trying to get in ... If that sort of pressure keeps up (and if membership keeps rising), we may have to think about bringing up the schedule for future exchanges. For now though, the schedule will remain as posted on the Exchange program information page, (a new exchange every three months). http://woodblock.com/forum/exchange/index.html Sign-up for Exchange #7 is scheduled to begin on July 1st. (just so you know!) RUMOURS Please note that the rumour currently circulating among certain members that a third mailing list will soon be started to accompany the present two - [Baren] and [Baren After Five] - is completely untrue and without foundation. [Baren Anonymous] will not be starting up (not soon anyway) ... Members who are having trouble with their woodblock print addiction will have to seek help elsewhere!
