Baren Digest Monday, 10 April 2000 Volume 11 : Number 966 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 10:19:36 -0400 Subject: [Baren 9206] Re: Baren Digest V11 #965 Julio, the pictures of Opening Night and the rest of the show after it was hung are a joy to behold! The display cases and information table make this a perfect demonstration of what the craft is all about. Jim and I want to come see it, so I may be contacting you about directions before the month is over. Thanks, everyone, for the good information on News Feed. Baren is really cooking these days, thanks to the work of the council and Dave. Daniel, the news of your print possibly becoming a poster shows how woodblock printmaking is alive and well and useful still!!! I think there's nothing like this medium for beauty of color and strong design that gives that punch a poster needs. Let us hear as soon as you know! Aiko's Art Materials Import, Inc. 3347 N. Clark St. Chicago,IL 60657 312.404.5600 Aiko's is in a neighborhood that was settled by the early Swedish community in 'near north' Chicago. Now it has many Asian businesses and restaurants. Aiko's is a tranquil little world just across the 'El' tracks from Wrigley Field (baseball..."Cubs"...strangers to winning!) It is a tiny wonderful treasure! I don't think that they have a web site or internet address. I have also recently purchased very beautiful papers from Lauren at the PaperConnection International Tollfree 877.434.1234 fax 401.331.4071 in Rhode Island. She deals in handmade Japanese papers, "exclusive importers of the Tosa Washi handmade papers from Japan's Kochi Prefecture Paper Co-op Union, makers of hundreds of different styles, colors, and materials of beautifully crafted paper". I have been using some of her papers lately and really like them. She has usuyou gampshi - a breath of tissue in lovely colors that is marvelous in chine colle', (- I guess REAL [Baren] members don't do that out loud!) Gayle, if you come to Chicago don't miss the Japanese Prints and the the Japanese 'environment' room (I don't know what the room is called but it is a favorite place to visit at the Art Institute). The collection changes every two months to protect the prints. Right now there are a few magnificent dragons in the mix, as well as a kimono with small dragons embroidered in metallic threads. Julio, thanks to you and your friends and family for Skokie show - incredible and I loved your story - Aiko's & a Munakata block! Thanks again. Maria, the Baren Suji is wonderful. Dave, I saw that those of us in Exchange#5 had to wait to sign up for #6 and the next time I looked it was full! No waiting around for this group. Greg, can't wait to see how the Kampala show turns out. All the new members are impressive as well - welcome. The growth and productivity of this group is mind boggling. We were opening the Gilkey Center at the Portland Art Museum that fall and Mark gave me a tour of their facilities as well as all their rules, which helped us define our own rules. I was there a day early for our meeting and spent all afternoon in the museum. I confided to him that I missed the 20th century art because I got sidetracked in the Asian Prints room. He said "probably not a bad decision". A true print lover! If you get to Chicago, Gayle, be sure to see it, it is well worth the trip! Julio, I just looked at all the photos, what a massive undertaking. You get hugs from Oregon! I am so impressed! The new photos were taken after hours so that's why you don't see a soul. There are many more coming, but they are all in digital form right now....and Sharen also has another roll of photos.....if you stop the mouse over each thumbnail, the legend for each photo pops up. http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/libphotos.html There are some name tags missing and the legend that goes with the Dragon Exchange is also missing in the photos. Thanks again!!!! Julio ps. Now I must turn to what started this whole crazy adventure....cutting and printing....of which I have done none in the last three weeks. CUT ! PRINT! ------------------------------ From: ArtfulCarol@aol.com Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 13:01:31 EDT Subject: [Baren 9211] Re: Art Institute of Chicago I must , must give the Art Institute of Chicago my appreciation apropos of Barbara Mason's remarks. About 10 years ago, when I was passing through Chicago for one day, I noticed that a particular exhibit in which I was interested opening the next day at the Instutite. I asked the person at the front desk if it was possible for me , an artist from NY, to see the show beforehand. Then she picked up the phone and asked for aVIPguide for me.I was thrilled and remember a special image by Max Ernst, a landscape print in one of his last experimental techniques-- "decalcomania" Since then I have developed "decalcomania " in my printwork and have a large series of unique images. I'm sure you have experienced acts of kindness that have opened art doors for you, too I know that we all appreciate that. There is an expansion program happening that will increase the space available for study and viewing of the vast collection of prints, as well as for storage. There are rooms of Japanese prints available at all times, though! Plan to spend at least half a day when the study room reopens,-- you must have a reservation. Write ahead and make requests of what you wish to see. You all know this, but spending a morning viewing ancient woodblock prints and master prints (and their blocks) in several states is a joy. Looking at the line and color and how it 'layers' or works together is amazingly intimate and wonderful. You are there with these treasures in front of you at the table or on an easel. Look at a lino reduction print of Picasso's and be astonished at it's size and how masterfully it 'works'. There is also the Block Museum at Northwestern University, Evanston, very near Skokie, that is also increasing it's size right now! Added feature! --the entire collection is available on line! Click on "search our collection". Get a cuppa and browse a wonderful collection!
