In Junior High I saw a print by Gustave Baumann and the light of a long journey, for me, was lit. As an Engineering student at University of South Florida I took a Figure Drawing, a Design, and a Intro to Printmaking courses for fun, enjoyed the Print course. Spent the next 20 years in race cars, hot air balloons and sign business, in 1989 attempted change of life and attended Ringling School of Art & Design, again exposure to the print shop. In 1993 took a Japanese Woodblock Printing class from Hiroki Morinoue, and was hooked on Hanga. In 1994 a move to New Mexico, a marriage with children, the retraining of the bachelor, and the etching of glass, stone and wood for monetary remuneration. I have lost touch with Hanga process, so it is off to Graham's boot camp this summer, to kick this boy in to shape. I want to thank all of the Barener, that I have been reading and viewing your work for the last 5 months, for making me realize I want to come out of this cocoon and print again. Yours, JD Roehrig PS. I like your work, sort of Asis meets New Mexico. Both strong images. Looking forward to seeing you at Graham's. Hope it is going well, Maria and you sell lots of prints! This being a full time artist is harder than it sounds! First you have to do the work, then you have to promote the work, then you have to show the work and hopefully sell the work, then you have to ship it. Sometime in there, doing six jobs at once, you are supposed to be a loving wife and mother (do wolves count?) and keep your studio and home tidy. I am now running screaming from the room! But not before I wish Maria a great Opening!!!!! It was suggested to me that the blue steel knives edge would not hold up to hardwoods like cherry as well as the white steel, because of the inclusion of Chromium in the edge steel. Does anybody care to share thoughts on the selection of cutting tools for woodblock. Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C. How appropriate, that I spent the day in the studio printing away merrily... I have a crazy printmaking instructor this quarter who wants ten 11"x14" prints in ten weeks. Needless to say, I should have a lot of new stuff to show y'all in two and a half months or so... - --Pete ------------------------------ From: "Keri & Tom Marion" Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 19:54:58 -0700 Subject: [Baren 9231] filling in cuts hi! i was wondering if anyone could offer advice on filling in areas that you've cleared.. it seems i've gone a bit haywire and cleared a little too much, though it's not too bad. would appreciate any help offered :) shanka., k. marion ------------------------------ From: Jack Reisland Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 18:10:30 -1000 Subject: [Baren 9232] Re: knives eli griggs wrote: > Does anybody care to share thoughts on the selection of cutting tools for > woodblock. Although I'm sure that the white steel knives will hold up just fine, it seems to me that the lack of a handle would make them uncomfortable to work with, particularly in the traditional style. They are also not cheap. For the same price or less you can get a Japanese hangi to from McClain's or Grahams guy.
