If you say it, it is slander. A defense against libel is truth. For example, if someone says (or in our case writes) over and over again they they are a terrible printmaker, then they should not be surprised if someone calls them a terrible printmaker. Well, everyone has their down days. One does not expect to be a great printmaker every day or every print. Just competent. I suppose you could look at a person's prints and think they are great and come to the conclusion that the person has low self-esteem. But anyway, you get my point. MEMBERS' ACTIVITIES Ray Hudson sends this note: "I'm off to teach a woodblock course at an Elder Hostel at the New England Craft Center near Northampton, Massachusetts. I think I have only 4 students (and two are turning for the third year in a row) so the time should be very rewarding ..." EXHIBITIONS Greg Robison sends this report from Uganda: "The opening of the Kampala show went very well, as I have told a number of members off-list. The extra effort many of you made to provide me with bios and comments was a wonderful addition. Many visitors told me that they spent much more time at this show than they normally do at an art gallery, so absorbed were they in the diversity of work and the stories behind the pictures. Half the Baren artists and a quarter of the Ugandans were also represented with self-portraits, which were paired with their main work. This also was a very successful arrangement. "For the opening reception I hired some hungry piano students to play classical pieces on a full-size keyboard I provided, bought some bulk South African wine which was served by staff borrowed from the restaurant located across the lawn from the Gallery, and had various munchies and finger food of diverse ethnic origins. The high point, though, was the announcement of the recipient of the Mason-Robertson Purchase Award, which went to a lecturer in art and printmaking at Makerere University. "I was so taken up by the excitement of awards that I created my own prize, the 'Curator's Award', which went to the young Ugandan artist showing the most creativity in interpreting the theme of the show. It was won by a recent art school graduate who describes himself as a fashion designer and graphic artist who incorporates ethnic African themes into his work. I will send scanned images of both of these prints to Baren-Suji for next month's issue. Lest the Compliance Committee of the M-R Purchase Award think I slipped them the inferior print and pocketed the better one for my own award, the framer of this whole exhibition, who had therefore seen all the prints in the show before it opened, went immediately to the M-R winner (before he was announced) and attempted to sticker it with her own 'sold' sign! Fortunately, our winner's print was in an edition of 3, and the others were available, so I was able to satisfy the framer. There are many other details, but I won't go into those here. After all, as a printmaker, I want to leave you with just an impression ..." BLAST FROM THE PAST (*) French Colour Prints. At the Brooklyn Museum, Eastern Parkway. To September 1st. The exhibition, entitled "Estampes Galantes," is made up of 18th century prints from the Lachman-Misse collection and the Knoedler Galleries. 'CLIPPINGS' >From the Reuters news agency: LONDON: Porters at a London auction house put a $158,000 painting by artist Lucian Freud into a crusher because they thought it was garbage. "It is an extremely unfortunate situation and we have taken immediate steps to prevent it happening again," said a spokesman for Sotherby's, who confirmed that the painting had been accidentally destroyed. The painting was delivered to Sotheby's but the porters believed the protective case and the picture were in fact an empty box. They placed it in a refuse crusher. The Sotherby's spokesman refused to comment on the fate of the porters - but he did say they had not been dismissed.
