[Baren] the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Friday, 14 July 2000 Volume 12 : Number1076 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gary Luedtke Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:21:05 -0400 Subject: [Baren 10445] Motivated by greed??? Graham, after I admittedly put him on the defensive, had this to say, to which I shall try to make my comments brief. <He limits the edition to further "enhance" the value of the print. < Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2000 13:39:07 +1000 Subject: [Baren 10446] Motivated by greed??? In the ongoing saga of tension between Graham and Gary they said. ************* >In a word, isn't that what all of us are doing by >making multiples? If true art is our strict ethic, then why make >multiples of it? Isn't that motivated by greed? Why not make one work of >art and move on to the next creation? That's what painters do. Beautifull ! You have just effectively insulted all of the baren members.... ************ I found Gary's post extremely offensive, and his continuing attacks on Graham quite juvenile and inappropriate for this forum. But what can you expect from someone who (I am led to understand) has never carved a block or pulled a print. Isnt it the case that only those who have first hand experience are qualified to speak on a subject? Wanda, I use rice paste to paste the paper down, do you think the gum arabic works better? It works!!! I decided to work on that theme in order to struggle more effectively with my self conscious feelings about making art. I was frozen when I tried to make a piece art because of the audacity of my desire, even inside my head, to make a work of A rt. Finally, I decided to make art in which the subject was conscious of being confined to a finite, two dimensional space. I planned to make just one or two as a mental-block breaker. This theme of the confined figure called other conflicts between the infinite and the finite throughout human experience. For the next three to four years, this theme opened rich possibilities to me for explorations, and of the possibility of improving on the previous piece in the series. . After four years, there devloped a different kind of "story"I felt more compelled to struggle with, and I pretty well abandoned the theme for several years. But we, the theme and I are not done yet, a deep plot is hatching in my subconciousness...child of an old stray thought... I think one is just not always finished with working out all one has to say about a theme in one piece. It is only sad when an artist continues with a theme or technique after the last creative ember is ash. Thematically. "has never carved a block or pulled a print." I am not going to carry this thread any further by responding to Gary's latest. I have no Idea why he sent the first volley but I ask everyone to move on with the important things and disregard the postings on this nonsense. Time to create..... cut....print Regards Graham How can I miss you if you won't go away? ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V12 #1076 *****************************
