[Baren] the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Thursday, 20 July 2000 Volume 12 : Number1083 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vollmer/Yamaguchi Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 09:25:28 -0400 Subject: [Baren 10525] Celebrations Sarah: I think I found a good deal for stones in the Japan Woodworker catalogue. The gold stone is all you need for everyday maintenance, but the red "medium" is very nice to have, too. Japan Woodworker seems to offer a combination of medium/red and fine/gold for $40 that might be good for those of you who don't have a good waterstone. It's a bit smaller than Sarah's and my "Gold Stone". Jean: I add my hearty congratulations to you and Howard! Kat: Thank you so much for the nice words about my woodcut class at Frogman's. It was great to see you cutting away, smiling indeed! The way you cut, with small marks and texture all over makes your blocks print smoothly. And the layering and blending of 3 colors worked very well. I liked the Frogman, too, an inspiring workshop all around. Each person made an edition so we all exchanged at the end of class, very nice to have such a good portfolio. Lezle is a master draw-er and had overlaid her three color blocks very nicely. We'll see who else shows up on Baren, I did recommend woodcut.com to all. We had a celebration banquet at the end for about 50 printmakers from all over the country. Barbara: We did one one-color 8 x 10, then 12 x 16 in color for my one week class. How big are the blocks you are printing in Yugi's class? I like the idea of a black/grey reduction plate, a great way to learn to control shades of color. Can you tell us about his background? I guess I am a bit intimidated by the process. Maybe I can just start and I will post images, AND QUESTIONS, as need be! I love getting mail. * * * Barbara, thanks for the journaling about your and Wanda's experiences at the Summer Camp hanga workshop. Would you say working in black, then adding grays, etc. is a good way to learn? Or do you feel anxious to get into colors? If anyone has experience about a If I may but in. The Southern Graphics Council is the nations largest fine art printing organisation with over 700 members. The SGC began as a regional organisation but has become international with members in 48 states and number of countries around the world. Our next conference will be in Austin in the spring of 2001 and should be great as usually. I can not seem to find the web address at home but can post it later if you are interested(or some one else can). Is that because no one volunteered to demo it? Do you think there is little general interest? I did not see any portfolios with woodblock in them either. I wonder why. It seems to me we should get someone like Graham or April to come and do a demo, after all I think more people would have an interest if they saw it done right. I saw a demo when I was in college and I can tell you, it was pathetic. Even I could do a better job and my skills are new and not that great. Everyone wants to move toward non toxic, we are already here with woodblock. I suppose I'm never going to hear the end of that 'foot' episode - I should have had more sense that to do it that way in public ... But if that's what it takes to get the idea across that the baren cover has to be ____tight!____, then I guess the sacrifice of my pride was worthwhile! *** April wrote: > We'll see who else shows up on Baren, I did recommend woodcut.com to all. Wanda brought her camera and we were working so hard we forgot to take pictures. maybe today. I am proofing a four block color print today, that in addition to the reduction print. I cagily used the key block from the black and white for the color print, so only needed three more blocks. With luck it will turn out and not need any more blocks. Wanda is doing a lovely print. She is such a good carver, so tidy. Mine are a little rough in comparison. (OK, a lot rough) Barbara ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V12 #1083 *****************************
