Woodcut.com? I've never been there. :-) Don't let Barbara kid you - her prints are really impressive. She did a landscape for the chiarascuro print that is just gorgeous. And her tree print is going to be a lovely thing, I can tell already. Me, I'm just plugging along as usual. I will try to get some pix today - nothing funny going on, just lots of hard work. But fun anyway. I am running on double time with my animals & having to leave the house at 8am & getting back at 6pm. I think one week of this is surely more than enough! And there is no one cooking for me! Marnie, where are you? Horacio, are you introducing a new Baren member to us, and if so, I want to welcome Murilo to Baren. Your English is fine enough to understand, and I think if you keep reading Baren you will come to understand the language more and more. This is actually good practice! Is there a way we could see your engravings? We're happy to have you here, Murilo! * * * Graham, I am enjoying your Boot Camp pictures. Looks like you had a lot of fun playing with all of us. Marco's images of his prints are not coming through for me but seem to show as lines of symbols. I wonder if anyone else has this problem. Thanks for the award on my color trials. It looks kind of luminous online. * * * Maria, do you want to have any additions to your page of boot camp pictures? I could scan in a few to share. I have a strange one where Greg is trying to look like the skull on my t-shirt and is succeeding pretty well. * * * James' present exhibit in Philadelphia, which includes a drawing of Chang and Eng (the original Siamese Twins), has interested me. I am reading a novel about Chang and Eng and I notice they married Yates sisters. Well, I'm a Yates on my paternal grandmother's side. We have a nice genealogy book and I was perusing it to discover if indeed the Yates sisters who married Chang and Eng are any relation. By glory, they are!!! We have a common ancestor, John Yates and those sisters who married Chang and Eng are distant cousins! What's strange is I've always been interested in twins and particularly conjoined twins, but I never knew why. Maybe genetically I remember something. We had to start over, and the Mac people have changed the address on us with their "newer and easier" way to make web pages. Please put this in your links instead of the one you have. http://homepage.mac.com/gwohlken/PhotoAlbum.html Thanks, Gayle ------------------------------ From: ArtfulCarol@aol.com Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 15:36:10 EDT Subject: [Baren 10544] Re: Martha Stewart program I was surprised there was no reaction (or is that a reaction?) to the Martha Stewart segment on TV. The print hint I picked up was to use a smaller brush to brush on paint onto the larger brush and then apply to the block. That should help me keep watercolor smooth. We only have a VCR (no antenna or cable), so we couldn't get the program. I would like to ask those who did see it: What was the program like? I have heard from many sources that Joshua is a real "character". I also read recently that he had moved back to Massachusetts... My dog and I had great fun watching Martha Stewart discover the wonderful world of woodblock printing. Joshua Rome was exceptionally generous letting "the star" use his knives to tackle a perfectly good piece of wood. He then proceeded to let her do things with his paper! (Do you think maybe he sampled her "sake in cucumber cups" before filming?) Seriously though, I was quite interested, and a bit surprised, seeing him work. Does he really print on dry paper? I liked his paper towel trick for the circle around the moon; but didn't he say he uses the same "wipe-away" method for the clouds? It's hard to imagine being able to get consistent results that way. For paint he said he uses kimono dye, but I don't think he used, or even mentioned, using paste. I've noticed his work usually has a very grainy appearance ... could this be a result of dry paper and the lack of paste? Anyone know more about him or his work? >From Martha's home state of Connecticut, Lynita ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 14:30:50 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10549] Re: Baren Digest V12 #1083 Thanks GRaham for putting up larger pictures of the group at boot camp. Oh, I loved those hilarious photos that you constructed and the ones of you and Marnie with your big sticks. It is a lesson in visual humor. Plus being a reminder that presentation of photos is an art in itself. http://members.home.net/woodblocks/BootCamp2.html Pete, we're very much looking forward to viewing your prints and hearing your groans and anguished cries as you attempt to master hanga. You could save yourself some agony by starting with sized paper. You'll have to post them on your own web site or on one of Dave's spaces for pictures because they don't come through in the listserve. I thought that Martha's show was interesting and informative! I also picked up a few things that will be helpful to me in my printing. There were important things that must have ended up on the cutting room floor in editing the program! Mr. Rome seemed to try to explain something about the kimono dyes that he had discovered just before he left Japan to do the show. The information wasn't given. I couldn't find out much specific in searching the web for possible information that printmakers could use concerning the dyes. Joshua Rome was exceptionally generous - --I agree, Lynita! Martha Stewart has an extensive website, and you can search the program dates to get further information on the program, recipes, sources, etc.. On the "Japanese Theme" day, she also visited the extensive fishmarket in Tokyo with sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa, prepared sobo noodles with him and discussed Joshua Rome's book. You can see more of Joshua Rome's work at the Ren Brown Gallery: Sharen ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V12 #1084 *****************************
