[Baren] the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Monday, 24 July 2000 Volume 12: Number1087 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Eger" Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 08:06:09 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10581] Martha Stewart If we all worked eight hours a day for six months to publicize woodblock printmaking, we still would not even approach creating the great publicity Martha Stewart has given the medium on her daytime TV show. This is an unexpected boost for this printmaking medium that is like money falling from heaven. I am considering printing out a copy of her web site for that day, taking it to Macy's, and proposing they hire me to demonstrate hanga there, and sell my prints as well. I expect you who eschew selling art work to denigrate my proposal immediately. You are right on the money here Jean. They can make all the faux pas they want...... as long as they promote our sport. I'll bet it was an education for lots of people and we need as much as we can get. With a couple of happy SwapShop participants buzzing about the prints they have just received, I'm sure the rest of you are saying, "Where the heck can we _see_ them?!" Well, once again I ask that you indulge me with your patience. You see, I had fully intended to have them scanned and uploaded to Dave by now, but I have encountered a wee problem beyond my control. You see, I don't own a scanner of my own yet, so I need to use the scanner at work. However, this past week our whole computer network has been undergoing tweaking by some allegedly helpful techno-geek seeking to eliminate some minor inefficiency which has had the effect of paralyzing all of our terminals until he finishes. So, I hope it shouldn't be to much longer now. By the way, new prints are rolling in weekly now (including a package yesterday via Eire from Sylvia, the star of the County Down); so why not get hopping and send in _your_ prints so we can have some more happy customers? Cut! Print! Apply stamps! James Mundie, Philadelphia USA SwapShop coordinator ------------------------------ From: "Daniel L. Oh well, just finished the 7th and last color on my most extensive and intricate block to date. 9x12, first time with oil and reduction lino-block. If you are not familiar with this Mexican celbration, think of the political prints of Posada. Unlike Halloween, this is not a scary or spooky celbration. It's more like a visiting day from heaven when our families get together with those who no longer live close by. Dia de los Muertos is November 2 Anyway, In San Antonio, while traditional families celebrate in the cemetaries, the artists have turned this into a major arts season. Related art exhibitions are everywhere, and Stonemetal Press holds a postcard printmaking exhibition and auction the first weekend in October. If anyone is interested in donating a postcard to our exhibition, visit our website stonemetalpress.homepage.com/diadelosMuertos.html. after July 15. Since the Print Australia website was launched with a whimper about nine months ago, it has grown in ways I never anticipated and at a rate I never expected. It was conceived as an on-line resource for printmakers, papermakers and book artists, giving special attention to Australian activities. http://www.acay.com.au/~severn If you have a personal printmaker's website displaying your work I would be pleased to add you to the Print Australia Catalogue. The purpose of this mail is to invite you to participate in a round of print exchanges that have just been launched. The first is open to Australians only, the other two are international in scope. Details may be found at http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/exchange.htm Applications to participate may be made by completed the forms provided. Please note that participants are accepted solely on the criteria of first-in, first served. To facilitate in administering the exchange, it is requested that participants join the Print Australia mailing list. http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/discussi.htm These print exchanges follow the anticipated success of the inaugural exchange which was themed 'sacred tree'. The prints from this exchange will be exhibited online in the new "Impressions" gallery on the website when the exchange concludes in September. Impressions expands Print Australia by providing printmaking events, an on-line gallery and an on-line magazine. Contributions to Impressions are sought from interested persons. http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/Impress.htm Please feel free to forward this mail where appropriate.
