What I didn't put on the page, not wanting to offend prospective customers, is that you have to also be ready to answer questions and comments like: - - did you do these paintings yourself? - - do you do portraits? - - can I just sit in your shade for a while? - - I thought Southwest was out! - - do you also sell your originals? (at this point I usually hit the customer on the head with a block of cherrywood and stuff a "woodcuts" handout in their pocket) - - I like frogs, do you have any frogs? turtles? light-houses? (I gave them your name & website, Graham) ...and my ol' time favorite: - - that (carving) takes a long time! don't you get sick of it? Just smile away and hand out your info sheets! Re: Op at Florida Printmakers This is EXACTLY the type of stuff we need to be sharing with one another. Thanks Dan! You can definitely count on my entries and an announcement in Baren-Suji. Here is the URL for the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia: http://www.visart.uga.edu/ If you click on the hyperlink "coordinator" at the bottom of that intro page, you get a little list of contact personnel. It was interesting to read the newsletter from David and the report from his friend Sadako. The thought that came to mind while reading about David's travel activities this summer, was that he was at some other place before or after staying 3 weeks with Graham and I, or he had a Senior Moment and forgot our names. The first clue that it was our home, was David's family group picture Graham took (a credit would have been appropriate) which was e-mailed to him. We knew he would want to have this as a keepsake. I recall Graham took numerous shots and this one was the best of everybody. He then spent a couple of hours touching up with photoshop after which he printed high resolution copies with our 6 colour ink jet printer on special photo paper for all the members of his family. Just a friendly jesture for the occasion of the Bull's 50th wedding anniversary. We picked Sadako and David up at the Ferry terminal on June 5th. They were loaded down for Graham's workshop, and ready for serious sightseeing. During that time, as they did not have transportation and we are in the country with no regular bus service, we taxied them here, there and all over during the next six days. We made sure they were able to see all the best places whether it was 7 kms to Sidney, 21 kms to Butchard Gardens, 30 kms to Horicultural Centre or 50+ kms to Coldstream Park where they walked their buns off, up and around the mountain. This was the only day we could not pick them up however, so they got their first taste of our transit system, making their way back late in the day. One evening we were treated to a lovely dinner at a local pub and another time a home delivered pizza. That was a fun week as we went out of our way to try to please them. Each morning they were spoiled by being served coffee at the bedroom door. Kind of a nice eye opener and kick start for the day of being taxied to sightseeing attractions. That week they were our guests and was complimentary. On Friday the family arrived..... all seven and we found pillows for everybody. They had a wonderful reunion and lots of laughs and serious discussions. Sunday, the 11th, our load lightened as three family members departed. On Monday Mom and Dad Bull left. David's girls .... neat kids by the by.... stayed until Thursday which was an unscheduled happening. Big homework projects ate up most of that time. The family was our guests and we only covered our costs during their anniversary celebration stay with us. Prior to the workshop starting, Graham spend the best part of a day constructing a Hori-dai from materials which he had purchased the week before. This enabled Dave to sit on the floor, at his insistence, where he worked....his fingers to the bone and his butt numb .... printing like a machine. The location was "not in a corner" but front row centre of the wall as can be seen on Graham's web page at: http://members.home.net/woodblocks/wkspcasual2000.html Dave worked with Graham on this location and it was his 2nd choice as it afforded a good position for all to observe his work. The 1st choice was the centre of the workshop floor but with nine participants ..... who always come first...... there was not enough space. The location gave him excellent reflected light on the inked plate. So all was set for the workshop, which Dave was adamant about not teaching in an artist's studio, but would only answer questions. Surprises were in store! "There were no formal classes during the week." is a mystifying statement in David's newsletter. Maybe David was talking about another workshop he was at this summer ! ! Graham worked his buns off every day and evening, teaching. It may not have been David's or the Japanese way, but it is a very successful Canadian technique that Graham has used and perfected over 24 years. The participants love the informal aspect of learning without being pressured. Graham's way builds confidence with positive, constructive statements. He prefers not to hold up his abilities or work as the way to teach for fear of developing "me toos". Creativity is a delicate area and needs careful, personal and individual nurturing so as not to develop clones. As I write this, we have 4 repeats for next year and this certainly is assurance that there is professionalism in his teaching. Three of the five repeats at this year's workshop signed up before knowing David was attending. When people ask to return, it is rewarding and satisfying for Graham. When Barbara and Wanda presented Graham with the Walter J. Phillips book "Tranquility and the Turbulence", he was truly overwhelmed. It confirmed in our minds that we are doing it right. Are we going next year ?.... sure ! Energy permitting. For Graham, it is the stimulating highlight of the year and it keeps him humble.......And if that doesn't work then I'm here to remind him of his lot in life. And if that doesn't work I flash the little sign tacked up in his studio..... Artists must never be prisoners Prisoner of a way of painting Prisoner of his reputation Prisoner of his own self Prisoner of success Henri Matisse Thank you for your understanding. I felt it was important to set the record straight in this matter Marnie Scholes. End of Baren Digest V12 #1130 *****************************
