As the only drier I have ever seen recommended for permanent artist materials (linseed based oils) is cobalt. You should first check to see if your paints, inks and mediums already have drier mixed in. If so then adding more drier, of any sort, could badly effect your works. .. Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C. Can't you just buy a bunch of different sizes from the hardware store without them having to be tapered? Your information on honing is interesting, Eli. It's just a matter of getting the most utility out of the fewest bits of wood. Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C. With thick paint or ink they might cause cracking because they dry the surface faster than the interior. It is probably a better idea to add fast drying colors to your ink whenever possible instead of using driers. The umbers, Prussian blue and burnt sienna have a pronounced drying effect on other colors. Usually only a very little is required. I know that adding a small amount of raw umber to zinc white oil paint will make it dry in a day or so instead of a week or more. The small amout added changes the zinc white from a pure cold white to a warm white. The color change would be unnoticeable in many colors. Although I have used Japan drier on my oil canvases, but only a little and it worked fine. Perhaps in 50 years or so the paint will peel off and then I will not be in the art hall of fame as all my paintings will be disintegrated!!! Alas!!
