I printed some more of my snake print today w/the baren, and it worked great! It's larger in size than the Murasaki (spelling?) baren which I purchased from McClain's and it feels a bit stronger. Good work, John! and I recommend it to folks who want the feel of a bamboo baren, want something better than those awful "student barens" but can't afford the "real" kind. Thanks for the hotel analogy, Maria, as always, very articulately described! Marilynn, I don't think you really need the soap w/Akua Kolor, there's glycerin already in it. Happy printing, all- Sarah ------------------------------ From: Claude Villeneuve Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 12:33:53 -0500 Subject: [Baren 12860] Re: Choppitty Chop Dan: Thanks for address of chop marks website - I enjoyed it very much. I think I'll carve a little one on a soft material to start with and see how it comes out! I made a mosquito this year, or rather, a crane fly, which is a long-legged relative. Physical reality may be preferable, but if anyone would like a virtual reality year end card, go to: Http://www.aprilvollmer.com/images_hanga/mosq.html My webmaster father has made some updates to my website, too. Two weeks ago I saw a wonderful show of woodcuts by Zarina in Chelsea. Simple black and white sets of images about the idea of home, very nice. Bridget Henry and Stephanie Walters, do you both live in Santa Cruz? I would love to see the printshop at the university. I will be in SC the first week of April. And speaking of east-west connections, I didn't know Jean had studied with Tomoko Murakami in San Francisco. I wondered how traditional her technique was and whether you had seen her work. Almost as good as physical reality. Lucky you, to have a webmaster father. I will go and look at your web-site later. Didn't you see the portrait of Tomoko Murakami that Jean had on her web-site? Is it still there, Jean? I must admit I haven't hopped over to see your web-site on your own domain yet. But congrats anyway. I'm still wending my way through the complexities of site-building. One of these days...... And Happy New Year to all of you. 2001 wow! On New Year's Day, I was jotting down some notes in my journal & when I went to write the date: 1/1/1 it was quite eerie. Thanks for the page on chops, Dan. They are beautiful, and it was interesting to read the article about them. Maria has gotten herself so committed she won't be able to go after all. This is a huge disappointment, as I had planned to have her teach me Spanish that weekend.....oh well, another time. We have two rooms reserved at this point and I show myself, Shireen and April for sure. Anyone else? If so let me know, if there are only the three of us, I may let one of the rooms go as three can certainly share a room. The informaiton for SGC is here: http://www.utexas.edu/cofa/a_ah/sgc/index.html These rooms are hard to get so I don't want to cancel if we need the second room. I guess there are a lot of conventions in Austin and that is why we reserved these so early. So let me know, Thanks, Barbara ------------------------------ From: Ruth Oprean-Cardillo Date: Sat, 6 Jan 2001 20:13:24 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 12865] Re: supplies for students Hi... I am interested in this Clay technique you write about... after it is bisqued, do you carve then? with what tools?... I would also be interested in finding out about Tomoko Murakmi workshops as I live in San Francisco... looking forward to your response... thanks, Ruth. ------------------------------ From: "John and Michelle Morrell" Date: Sat, 6 Jan 2001 21:51:08 -0900 Subject: [Baren 12866] Snake Exchange, Moderating the Baren, etc. charset="iso-8859-1" Josephine said what I had dreaded hearing--that she was having trouble because so many of us neglected to note the country in posting our addresses to the Snake Exchange list. I am one of the guilty ones. I think that all of us are US--didn't notice any that weren't when sending out prints. There are many weak apologies I could make for our lack of consideration, but maybe group embarrassment or just the probable lack of reciprocated prints from overseas is enough. Dan, your celtic snake knots were awesome. I have spent a good deal of time on committees with and without chairs, facilitators, moderators, or whatever you wish to call the person who takes responsibility for trying to keep things flowing. I do not much like attending meetings, and meetings without facilitators drag on forever. Wanda was doing a great job. I was delighted to have all the html and mime junk deleted. Because they always had interesting things to say and spoke a lot, I am sorry if Graham and Josephine found editing difficult and choose to drop the Baren . However, the Baren is better with some editing--my 2 cents. It was good to see a few of the quiet ones speak out the past few Barens. <^><^><^><^><^><^> Michelle Morrell jmmorrell@gci.net <^><^><^><^><^><^> ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest v14 #1277 *****************************
