Baren Digest Monday, 8 January 2001 Volume 14 : Number 1278 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Mon, 8 Jan 01 00:21:54 -0000 Subject: [Baren 12867] Re: Lino and waterbased inks In Australia we can still buy the brown lino or the grey Silk Cut lino...other postings have given the difference between the two with Graphic Chemical's expert advice on the joys of working with warm lino...(don't forget - sharp tools!) Lino takes waterbased inks well, but use them differently to the traditional style of the hanga technique..I have for several years used waterbased Coates (and other brands) Pantone waterbased relief ink on dry paper.I have experienced that thicker good quality paper will not shrink between colour applications (200gms). These relief inks are designed to be used with a roller. It shouldn't be necessary to add linseed oil to the relief ink, but it can be done ...it might be old ink. The linseed won't leave a "stain" mark, but the smell will still be there for a long time, especially if the prints are stored in a confined space. Wait for the first colour to dry before printing second and subsequent colours. Transparent colours give beautiful effects if overprinted on previous printings, the same as watercolour painting. To get a transparent effect there is an Extender in the same paint range to mix with the opaque colour...mix a little colour to the extender...1:10...test it on a piece of paper...add more colour to the original mix to darken the colour ...2:10...3:10...4:10 ..till you get the colour you require. The beauty of the waterbased ink is it washes off the roller and the plate in water...heaven! Admittedly the waterbased colour is not as intense or shiney as oil, but neither is watercolour compared to oil paint. Whatever you print whether in lino, wood, etching, etc always use the very best paper you can afford...for the very best results, especially with waterbased printing or painting. Waterbased relief inks can also be used on your woodblocks too. Not a familiar brand here, where is Coates made? Is it a rewetting ink? I mean, if the ink dries totally on something, say your glass, can you add water to make it soluble again? Lots of the waterbased ink here has a polymer base and is not rewetting. It would be interesting to know what is in this ink. I work a lot with kids and am always looking for a better ink that rewets, for obvious reasons. Regarding the SGC I think itās important to exchange information about that and to pass information to the members of the form about the conference papers, documents and reports. So we are looking forward for detailed reports about the events of the conference and publications. Thanks for your efforts to keep us informed Regards Arafat Al-Naim Sofia, Bulgaria ------------------------------ From: Shireen Holman Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 14:17:13 -0500 Subject: [Baren 12870] Re: Southern Graphics council At 09:40 AM 1/7/01 -0800, Arafat wrote: >Regarding the SGC I think it's important to exchange >information about that and to pass information to the >members of the form about the conference papers, >documents and reports. I will probably be writing something up for the Maryland Printmakers newsletter about the events, etc. at the conference, so I could add that to Baren Suji, if Maria would like. If I thought the messages were being censored I would be out of here in a heart-beat. But, editing is just cleaning up the messes. Thanks, Wanda, you're doing a great job. Are you going to find time to apply to NWPC this April? Sharri PS I really hope both J and G will come back - they are such wonderful contributors about process, etc. ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 13:45:33 -0700 Subject: [Baren 12872] Re: Baren Digest v14 #1277 Hi Sharri, I appreciate your comments - just for the record: neither Graham nor Josephine has unsubscribed. Much to my surprise, only one person has unsubscribed lately - "too many e-mails & too much strife" were the reasons quoted. I think the good greatly outnumbers the bad on Baren. Perhaps most of you feel the same way. I do plan to try for North West Print Coucil Membership this spring. It has been one of my goals since I started making prints. ****************************************************** Michelle, I am also guilty of not putting USA on my address. Yes, I admit to thinking that *I* am the center of the universe occasionally. :-) In looking at the 60 addresses on that list, though, I notice that the people from New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, etc. have remembered to put their country! Thank goodness! We'll all do better for the year of the Horse (2002) I am sure. I, too, am glad to see some of the quieter people come out & post to the list. Even though some of us don't comment on each post, we do read and enjoy all of them. ****************************************************** I would like to say to all of you - thank you for your support, for your kind words, and for your expressions of appreciation. Being a moderator isn't a difficult job, I think of it as a service job. Kind of "waitress" of the mailing list. I have always thought being a waitress is one of the most educational jobs you can have. You get a real true view of the people you are waiting on. Everyone should try it at least once in their life. I received several very nasty postings that indicated very strongly I was not appreciatied or wanted. Just want to keep the record straight. Not trying to advertise here and I don't have any connection wit the people that put this out. It gives me a good feel for what's going on outthere and what type of art people are exhibiting. Just thought some of you may be interested, if you go all the way to the bottom of their page you will see instructions on how to subscribe to the FREE service. If anyone wants to see the current issue let me know privately and I can forward it to you....it's a bit large and I don't want to add stuff to the digest that perhaps many are not interested in. http://artdeadlineslist.com/subscribe thanks...Julio ------------------------------ From: Arafat Alnaim Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 23:34:06 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 12878] Re: Southern Graphics council Dear shireen, That would be perfect!
