For painting there's everything, But for engraving, there's nothing. We haven't lino, haven't tools ( for woodblock there's only the Japanese Tombo Carving Knife), we haven't even a single dry point so cheap. Either China ink we haven't - or better, we have only in small size. Waterbased ink for printing wood we haven't any. I never saw waterbased ink for wood. we have to make it with "maizena" (like your rice paste) and watercolor. Oil there are many for painting. For engraving we use typography ink.Japanese paper there are two kinds, they're beautiful but very expensive, only the paper already is a artwork. You have to travel to buy materials. What does this mean? I use these for printing small areas, and they work fine, I have some particularly good ones that say "Loew-Cornell" on the side. For bigger areas of printing, you really need some bigger brushes. A cheaper alternative to the "maru-bake" brushes is a shoe brush. Of course the real thing is so much better, but if you can't afford it, try getting some shoe brushes in different sizes and see how they work, they're usually made from horsehair which is the same type of hair as the expensive variety. One printmaker I know (I'm not sure if it was April or a woman named Kathy Caraccio) even tried preparing a shoebrush like most people prepare a marubake, that is, singing the ends of the brush etc (you can find info on doing this on Graham's website). Happy printing! Look what we've done while you weren't looking! As promised in the last Baren-Suji, we have contracted with several vendors in Japan to bring our members a new resource for supplies. You can now purchase traditional Japanese woodblock supplies directly from the makers through the Barenforum website. The Baren Mall is here! Wait until you see these prices, slurp, lick, drewl... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Read carefully the information pages, and especially the shipping page. These supplies will be shipped from Japan by the makers themselves. Shipping charges are accrued according to the weight of the items and there is no way at this time to do this automatically, so you will have to keep track of the weights as you order. Everything is explained very nicely in the Shipping Charges page and the Information page. In addition to bringing all our members (and the entire printmaking world!) an incredible resource for supplies, note that a portion of the mall income will be put in your very own Barenforum Treasury so we will be able to sponsor exhibitions and other events. Any problems with any Mall dealings can be reported to your friendly neighborhood Mall Manager, at your service. We have tested the thing up and down and all around, but sometimes there are gremlins in there... Everyone please give Dave a standing ovation for putting the pages together and coordinating with the vendors in Japan. http://barenforum.org just click on the Baren Mall link. Happy shopping! Spread the word... I am writing to tell you about a web site I visited recently. The name of the site is Build Your Own Etching Press, and you can find it at http://www.dougforsythegallery.com/Press.html . This site has a set of plans that will enable you to build your very own heavy duty custom built etching press. The presses are very strong and user friendly and cost a fraction of what it would cost to buy a pre built one. This is NOT spam. A friend of yours, sent this to you using Cliff's Tell Your Friends Script. If you'd like to add this script to your web page, you can download it free from http://www.shavenferret.com/scripts ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 16:20:06 -0800 Subject: [Baren 12890] second exchange? Dan, Have you lost your mind?????We can hardly keep track of what we are doing now! Maybe at some future date we will have enough for two at a time, lets hope so. In the mean time, send work into swap shop. None of us are taking advantage of this great option. http://www.barenforum.org/swapshop/index.html This is a way for all of us to work a little harder...Whimper...:~) I think I will do the print for #9 in case there are drop outs and I will send it to swap shop if not needed. This seems a good alternative. Lets go for it! After all, we can now buy all the best stuff for our work at the Baren Mall!!! http://www.barenforum.org/mall/index.html No excuses now for not producing a large amount of work!! We (Wanda and Myself) have ordered it and it will come in a crate to us and ship from Oregon. It will be available in about 3-4 weeks. Sorry we don't have it yet, Maria was just so anxious to get the Mall open that she did it without us! We are not 100% sure of the price yet, as we won't know the shipping costs or exact costs until the crate gets here, but think it will be $10 a sheet or less. This will be a great price for this hand made paper, Baren will keep a small percentage for the "kitty"and the savings will be passed on to the members who order. One advantage is it will already be in the USA so will arrive quite a bit faster than if it shipped from Japan. If we sell it all, we will reorder right away and always have it available for our Mall shoppers!
