Baren Digest Thursday, 8 March 2001 Volume 14 : Number 1347 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Tyrus Clutter" Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 17:23:07 -0700 Subject: [Baren 13752] Re: Another new member, and a press question Aha! Other people have seen this little beauty. I am not certain that the = press is even made any more. Dick Blick used to make this letterpress (The = two my school has are called magnetic signpresses). In the 70s, before = everyone was creating their own (usually badly designed) desktop publishing= , this university used to make signs to put up around campus on one of = these presses. This is one of the BEST ways to print wood and lino blocks. = There is a little grabber (not the technical term) at one end which holds = the paper and you can position the block easily with the magnets. A soft = rubber roller simply rolls over the top of the paper and block. One easy = swoop. My print area had one of these but it looked like it never was getting = used when I arrived. I started working with it to get acquainted. This one = is in excellent shape (after a little cleaning). I found another one at = our media services shop, but it is a little more difficult to use as it = was abused for several years. Better yet, they wanted to get rid of a = large stand (both presses fit on it) and all the old type and cases that = were taking up space. I MADE SPACE FOR THESE. Now I have my print classes = make books for their final projects. I do prints to include in the book = too, and then we all have everyone's print from that semester. It is a = good way for me to retain student work! Now, I'm not sure anyone makes the press any more. I contacted Dick Blick = (for more type) and they forwarded me on to some guy in Florida. I might = be able to find that info for you, but you'd probably have better luck = contacting Dick Blick. I have a question about printing presses: When I was an art student, the print studio at my school had several presses, including an etching press that was sometimes used for large relief prints, but most of the time for smaller work we used a different press, one that I have never seen = anywhere else. I wonder if anyone out there could tell me what it is called, and better yet, where I could perhaps get one. It was small, which is fine for me because I generally work small--maybe = an 11x17 bed or so, and, like an etching press, it had a roller that went = over the block. But instead of a wheel to turn, there was simply a handle on = top that was pulled directly across (kind of like one of those old credit card machines). It was so simple, just one quick yank and a perfect print came out. I'd love to have one because it was so small and compact, and so = easy to use. And, because it was so simple with no gears and fancy parts, I imagine it must be relatively inexpensive. Does anyone have any information about this? Thank you! Wanda, the other Hiratsuka is too young, though now that I see those faces, I think I have seen his work somewhere before. No idea if they are related. I searched on Keiko Hiratsuka Moore's book in Amazon, but no luck. I knew someone would come up with the answer. A friend wrote me recently that this Hirasuka will have a show at the Chicago Art Institute this summer. Nilsa, so glad you found the Lower East Side Printshop, a great place to learn printmaking in NYC! I'll be teaching hanga woodcut there this summer. best, April www.aprilvollmer.com ------------------------------ From: barebonesart Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 19:35:35 -0800 Subject: [Baren 13757] Re: Baren Digest v14 #1346 I don't think we are talking about Yugi Hiratsuka, as he is only in his 30's and has two small daughters. He isn't nearly old enough to have had a daughter who wrote a book that was published! Our Yugi does have many shows in Chicago, though, and went to school around there - and his work is everything Wanda said, and then some. A sweeter guy you couldn't hope to meet, unless of course, he was one of our Baren guys. Deborah said she did not have any way of getting digital images of her work. If you or anyone here has photos.... sharp and at least 4" x 6" (is best) you can send them to me and I will scan them for you. I got this lovely scanner which just sits here a blinks as me causing red eye.... its a green light. (<; It is easy and I will do some fine tuning with photoshop 6 and send them back as a 300 dpi "tif" if you are on a Mac or a "Jpg" if you are using one of those other thingies. I will also make a 72dpi jpeg for the web. You can zing this off to Japan and he will stick it on the Baren page. Just one caution... I can only give you back what you send. If your colour is off or out of focus it boils down to garbage in garbage out. Suggestion re taking pictures. Use daylight colour film and set you piece outside in the north light shade of a building. It is best on a clear day 3 hours after or before sunrise/sunset. Almost fill the viewfinder Use a 200 speed film. Shooting with flash is not recommended because with face on light there will or could be a flash back off the paper.... even none glossy and flat paper. If flash is the only way you can cope then shoot at a bit of an angle from one side (not two) and just about three/four inches... which will prevent flash back....(red eye we Scotch drinkers know it as). I will adjust the distortion with my trusty Photoshop. Did I miss anything.... My address is below... Graham "OLD" IS WHEN..... I rally want to get a press I can print monotype with that won't weigh a ton. All this type, and no press to (am)use it with. BTW the press sounds similer to the Morgan Line-o-Scribe which is a proofing press for monotype. It is a long thin bed with raised edges and rollers top and bottom which you pull along the bed. thanx ------------------------------ From: Lawrence Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 17:12:39 +1100 Subject: [Baren 13762] another press question Has anyone used the Speedball Press successfully with monotype? http://www.db-secure.com/zz400/13/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=1843 The press is simply a pressure plate mounted above a bed on a levered handle, costs $61.90 from dick blick. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use this type of press and get a reasonable result with monotype (fonts).
