I'll never see your message" Way below it said : Precedence: junk. This is the first timet this ever happened. Comments? That's what I use and it works very well. I use removable tape to hold the paper onto a pre drawn line. I tend to print the whole thing at once. In other words I ink up the boards and they are ready to go. I print the first color, flip back the page that's taped, add the second board and print that color, flip back, do the third, etc. That's the only way I can get good registration, but it works. It takes a long time to print that way, but my colors register very well. * * * The new rules seem fair, especially the ones about politics (always so personal to us) and nationality (I remember some slams against the U.S. that kind of hurt since I am a U.S.er. Personally, I love the diversity of the Earth and its people and I, of course, would feel really happy if everyone felt the same joy. ------------------------------ From: Brian Lockyear Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 10:20:55 -0800 Subject: [Baren 13963] Re: New rules & regulations for posting to Hi Carol- This is probably a case of over filtering. Because of the massive amounts of junk email being broadcast these days various sites have installed filtering software intended to automatically reject mail from sources which are thought to send junk mail. But if the filter starts getting too general it starts rejecting legitimate mail as well. I don't think there is much you can do about it from your end although you could post something via the board to the person you were trying to communicate with. They may or may not have control over the filter. What is that latin phrase? "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" "Who will keep the keepers themselves?" Dan has kindly offered to scan them and make them available at Baren. Thanks to all the participants! Wonderful to see a bunch of your work "in person", Maria! The two other artists whose work they put adjacent to Maria's was interesting and though different stylistically than Maria's, complemented it well, which is so often not the case in a group show. As for the work they had in another room in the space, I'm glad it was in a different room, that's all I'll say about that! anyway, congratulations Maria, your work looked great in the gallery and I hope you get a lot of wonderful feedback and hopefully some sales too! best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 19:04:54 -0700 Subject: [Baren 13966] Re: Spring has sprung! When one person can say i do not think you are saying the right thing you are gone that can be very bad. it can destroy the beauty of what you have. Because when that happens people will leave and form a new list wihout rules. Guess after thought I changed my course. When someone tells me , one person , that I can't do something, that is part of a group, I wonder why that one person has the authority to do such a thing??? The question I would ask is are moderators volunteers there to keep general order or are they executives running a ummmmm what? company? I thought this was artist geting together to chat???? Thanks to all who went to see the exhibit. Yes prints do look much different in person. I tend to chunk ink right in there and also use metallic inks mixed with the umbers and siennas that are impossible to see on the web. I wished I could have attended the opening, but a bit pricey from Vegas. And thanks to Ray for collating Exchange #8. I will happily await my set! Well folks, Baren-Suji is coming right along and I believe we are in for an exciting issue. Several of you really stepped up to the plate to help out and I would like to thank you (you'll know who it was on April 1st) for your contributions. This really would be an impossible job without the bits and pieces that the membership contributes. On another note, I designed my next few creations today in a fit of madness. I usually make terrible sketches on whatever piece of paper happens to be laying around. I know usually the woodcut process, especially traditional woodblock in Japan, requires careful planning and preparation. I sort of wondered how other members work. I think about a piece for a long time, but rarely sketch anything in advanced. I came to this habit because, when drawing, my first few sketches captured the concept I wanted to portray; later more careful drawings missed completely. I often scribble some doodles somewhere, end up losing my reference, and proceed to attack the block, drawing in pencil right on the wood. Then I go over the main lines with black marker or sumi ink and begin-a-cuttin' Sometimes the design changes during the process and ink colors and paper decisions are made as the block comes to life. The title is last, often after the prints are hanging to dry, although sometimes it pops up during cutting. Anyone care to share their ways? I'm off to see the wizard. Nothing like a road trip in the desert spring. Any members in Reno Nevada, do come by the convention center for a visit, ya hear? About the registration, I'm sure most people have their own systems, but what works for me is to cut out a hole in a piece of cardboard that just fits the block(s) (I usually do reduction or suicide prints). I tape that to the table or press surface. Lay the paper on top and line up with premarked centers lightly penciled on the back of the paper and the edges of the cardboard. Works pretty well. I spent the day downtown Portland sketching, yes it was a beautiful srping day and I celebrated my birthday a day late (it was the 19th). It was amazing, I did a ton of gesture pieces of people from all over downtown. I am hoping to use this work on a large print piece that is like a collage that will incorporate many images and a center point about the city or maybe just one that is personal to me. I sat in pioneer courthouse square and sketched early on and looked at the shapes from the coffee house. I felt just the linear shapes might enclose a collaged piece of all the people. It was so amazing there were bums in the park blocks going through the trash and music in the square. there are women dressed to shop in the Nordstroms or the shops in courthouse square, business people and children that are homeless. Today i got really hot, drawing, when it was late and I sat and did gesture drawings of people just standing and waiting for the bus. Me???, I am scared of the rules and I am scared to do an exchange. Will they accept me? Or will I be told I do not understand and be put somewhere they choose? Honestly I thought I would do the next exchange for certain, but now I am scared. I am afraid the axe will come down on me. I fear the freedom to do what I am and what I feel and what I know. I do not want to be part of something that is not free. Let me share about me : I have a BA: Fine Arts: Painting. I spent 10 years every Friday drawing the figure in watercolor (after getting the degree), I have taken 2 1/2 years of college level printmaking classes oh and 3 years of calligraphy ooops what a mess, it was ok but um, and I have done many volunteer things for my community, arts related, and I have shown in my city and at the Washington coast, where I have a ummm 3rd home or is that one the 5th who cares??????? lol. I have had several gallery affiliations. At present I have 18 framed pieces in Artists Gallery of Seattle, which is in the down town area and near their large stadium as well as near Dan Smith and many other galleries. I do not feel my background is one that lends to stupidity nor do I feel the need for censorship of my content or my artistic statements. I do understand the arts pretty well. I had assumed everyone would recieve a print like a normal exchnage. So, some will actually get two prints (i.e. duplicates) and some will get two prints that are different. I would say that the choice is up to you. You can do a different print or not. Does this help? dan dew P.S.
