( I respect the hard work of the volunteers completely) but it is not truly allowed and i could be banned for more than one. That is what worried me, just that it could happen later if someone very hard with the rules came in charge, someone very strict, who did not take time to know and just reacted in a negative and autocratic manner. But if there are 8 of you I will smile and figure you will deal well with it and fairly. I apologize for my paranoia and understand the need for control. And beleive me I do not want private matters or private fighting made public. OH goodie I can fall back on a linoblock, for an exchange, where my comfort zone rests, if the woodcut does not work. I have a drawing, from Mexico, I set aside, thinking it would make a wonderful woodcut. It is so soft and flowing. I certainly can scale it to size and go. the size is the paper size correct? I have a wonderful print that I got from a very talented printmaker, it is a small print but centered so beautifullly on a sheet of handmade paper. The beauty of this print outweights its small size, so i assume it is not the block size but the paper size and how we work that. We could do a large block and make it fit with a suitable border or a small and lovely block that is nice on the paper as well, correct???? I look forward to the growth and the exchange of work as well as ideas. Thank you, each of you, for your loving concern and reassurance to me. It may cost a bit more, but the difference in price should not be prohibitive. For 19 years I painted with acrylic on canvas and did all the stuff artists are expected to do. In 1994 I read an article on whiteline woodcuts and finally began experimenting about 6 months ago. Ruth Hogan was kind and generous in the information she gave via the phone. I am hooked and love it, but it takes time. I do one thing different though than the classic whiteliners and that is I "borrow" from hanga. I use a mixture of yes paste and water to spread the watercolor. It gives a smoother printing which I like. The purists might be offended by this - I'm not sure. David Bulls helpful articles on the "Romance of Woodblock Prints and Woodblock Printmaking - - a simple introduction", were so helpful. I read them over and over. Thank you everyone! You probably won't hear from me much because I am still a beginner. I appreciate all the info on technique. Are there any members from Madison, Wisconsin who do whiteline or hanga? If so please e-mail me if you would like to compare our trials, experiments, etc. Sincerely, Diana http://www.powercom.net ------------------------------ From: Daniel Dew Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 10:26:56 -0500 Subject: [Baren 14003] Exchange #8 Guess what the mailman just dropped off? The salesman said it was methylcellulose. After mixing with tap water the directions say it will not dissolve until ammonia is added. 4 tablespoons Methocel 1 gallon water 1 talblespoon ammonia. Do I have the wrong product?. All my prints are water based. Im just looking for smooth strong colors and have been having problems with "blotchy" lately. [ This is the method used to form the solution for paper marbling. ] Then you have to let it sit overnight to fully dissolve. If you simply add it to water it forms little globules, wet on the outside and dry on the inside and would probably take weeks to dissolve. If you do use ammonia I think you should let the container stand open for the ammonia to evaporate, as some colors are affected by the alkaline. I took them, unopened, to the studio and opened them with two other printmakers. What a happy activity! We Ohhh'd and Ahhhhh'd together, enjoying all of the beautiful prints! It was terrific to share them with people who knew good papers, interesting inks, incredible embossments, "look--that's chine'colled!", "why is that ink so shiny?", "That one's my favorite!", "that ink looks like it's metallic!" Thanks to everyone for their beautiful work--and special thanks to Ray for doing such a great job coordinating this exchange! Bravo, everyone!
