Baren Digest Saturday, 14 April 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1388 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Daniel Dew Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 09:49:49 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14168] Necessity The old saying that "Necessity is the mother of all inventions" has come true again. Two exchanges, due very near to each other, and I use a system of registration that requires punch holes. But I only have one set of pegs! What to do, what to do. Guess what? The end of a PaperMate, totally cheapo pen, is the exact correct size! Simply whack off the end, poke a hole in the base board, add a little glue and presto, chango, a neat little registration system is now in place. Simply use my three hole, paper hole puncher, and off we go. We're off to the races! see ya, dan dew ------------------------------ From: "April Vollmer" Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 18:04:32 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14169] Our Austrian Friend Dear All, Yet another report from New York, culture capital, where everyone ends up sometime. I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Schneider on Monday night. He was as sharp as expected, and brought me an armload of lovely prints. Black sumi ink on a rather thin kozo paper he sized himself. He is quite the character, and after completing college in Austria, decided that since he could find no one to teach him woodblock in Vienna, he would study in Japan! He moved to Japan and took language courses for six months before applying to university and studying woodblock printmaking with Prof. Tetsuya Noda. He is a respected contemporary artist who also knows everything about moku hanga. I had had the good fortune to take a workshop with Prof. Noda when HE was in NY (good thing it's such a culture capital!). It was fun to hear more about his university and teaching in Tokyo. And Michael's prints are (natch) much better in person than they are on his website, impressive though it may be. Also, I wanted to remind anyone near NY that Sarah Hauser and I will be demonstrating moku hanga at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Sakura Matsuri in two weeks: April 28 and 29 from 1:00 to 5:00. Anyone who wants to say hi, do come by and introduce yourself. Just push those kids aside! Today ,before i heard from Bea that they had arrived , i printed 32 Lynx of a different color , just in case that first, endangered, edition-tri-colored - never did make it at all ! so now i could send this black edition to Dan Dew for Salon de Refuse' ... or i can continue, as i have been doing, playing with colors on my ' Mermaid' block, that i am doing for Dans exchange . my Bar Harbor gallery-ALONE MOOSE- is having a july" MERMAID" show, so i thot it would be a great" endangered species" print also . the block is a wonderful piece of very old pine from some 24" wide , virgin pine boards a neighbor of mine has been carrying around for about 30 years and finally is using to build cabinets and finish work in her house . so i'm getting the scrap pieces ! this block has a great knot hole and interesting grain. these pieces of pine are so wide that theres lot of heartwood, which seems to carve firmer than the pine i get nowadays . the three color blocks for the mermaids are lino. a far greater portion of my wood blocks are black and white , than are color , but i am endeavoring to utilize my connection to Baren to encourage me to stretch myself into doing more color work, more often but coming from this intense concentration on black and white work, i always tend to feel that the my black or key block is stronger or i like it better , than the color blocks . also i ca n NEVER make up my mind about the colors- there seem to be endless permutations and combinations of color and i find it mind boggling , sometimes, to make those decisions .....do other black and white afficianados have this problem? will i send the black Lynx? , or the black Mermaids ? , or the color Mermaids? only time will tell ... but dont worry, Dan.... i WILL decide in time to give this packet extra time to make it to Florida before May 1 Gillyin-- machias maine (black hole of postal outposts) USA ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest v15 #1388 *****************************
