Opening 20 April 2001, 6 - 8 pm Exhibition continues till 4 May 2001 @ Impressions Gallery 6 Roe Street, Northbridge, Perth, WA, AUSTRALIA tel: (08) 9328 9449 gallery hours: Tue -Fri 11am-5pm; Sat, Sun 12noon-5pm "The idea for Where I Live exhibition originated in cyberspace. Josephine Severn, from New South Wales, opened a web site called Print Australia which ..."has three main aims" says Josephine: - to provide an on-line resource for printmakers, papermakers and book artists - to promote printmaking and raise its profile as a contemporary artform, - to raise the profile of Australian printmaking in the international community." One of the ideas to come out of this project was that of a print exchange (Where I Live is one of them). This occurs when a number of printmakers each prints an edition and sends it to a central co-ordinator. The co-ordinator compiles the prints and return a set to each printmaker/participant. Where I Live exchange required printmakers to use traditional printmaking techniques, and to comply with prescribed size limitations. It therefore shows a variety of printmaking techniques, and it also shows a variety of ways in which the artists responded to the title. ... depicted their homes set in particular geographical locations, ... indicated what their homes mean to them emotionally or psychologically, ... used the theme as an occasion to make social comments, ... engaged with ways of seeing or of making meanings using the concept of home as a kind of basic text." from the review "Where I Live" by Dr Jan Altmann (2001) and "Information Sheet" by Josephine Severn, PrintAustralia/8 Sep 2000 Print Australia Website http://www.acay.com.au/~severn Where I Live Online http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/wil/wil.htm ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest v15 #1393 *****************************
