I just completed and printed my first side grain woodcut in over 30 years and I guess that it convinced me that I should concentrate on engraving, but I certainly enjoyed the novelty. I hear that you are printing pretty much full time now - hope it goes well. Andy English ------------------------------ From: "Andy English" Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 16:35:34 +0100 Subject: [Baren 14210] sleeping with the enemy I mentioned in an earlier post that I had just finished my first side-grain woodcut for thirty years ( I was 14 going on 15 years old). This was for the endangered specied exchange. I decided to take a break from preparing for a show ( I hate framing!) to sit down and tell the story. You can find it here: http://www.andyenglish.co.uk/baren.html Please be aware that if you are of a sensitive disposition, or are easily upset by man's cruelty to woodblocks, that you should avoid this link at all costs. I cannot be held responsible for any trauma that may result. However, if you enjoy a giggle at a wood engraver's expense, then come on in! All the Best to you All, Andy ------------------------------ From: "Garth Hammond" Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 10:06:54 -0600 Subject: [Baren 14211] Re: framing RE:Mellissa, The best way is to make a "T" out of archival linen tape. The top of the T faces the mat board and the up and down length of the T faces the print. You glue the up and down length of the T to the back of the print and the top of the T to the mat board. This tape is easily removed with water soaking, but almost impossible to remove any other way. I use tape that is about 1/4 inch wide, but if you have wider tape, cut it down. I usually hang 3 "T's" on the back of each print, unless it is small and then I use only two. Best of luck, Barbara THANK YOU BARBARA FOR THOSE GREAT INSTRUCTIONS...very timely and well written. I loved hearing about you struggling with the grain of the wood, when your engraving work is so detailed & shaded. The rhino drawing/block/print is really exciting. I can't wait to hold it in my hands and take a really good look at it. Thanks for sharing your journey with all of us! " - its neat... or the time a diferently-abled adult women turned to me and burst into tears because she had lost her mother i gave her hugs and was able to get her interested in looking at my large collages of woodcuts and naming the animals then her mother reappeared if you are a sensitive person it can be rather overwelming to be responding to however many thousands of people who will pass by your booth ... you can detach or you can engage... you can do both ... its fun.. and its hard work .... I found that it attracts interest to be demonstrating if space , regulations, and your own inclination allow- by all means demonstrate ! some of the shows in Maine now wont even take you UNLESS you demonstrate i think it makes the show more fun and it gives you something else to do besides saying the same things over and over again 50,000 times or more during a weekend herein , we have the perfect opportunity to educate the average person as to what IS a woodcut ... a clearly labeled display, on a 5-8' table, goes a long way towards reducing redundant verbiage and, allows us to keep educating the public about woodcuts and print making a very large percentage of the people will not even know what a woodcut is we can tell them and we can also tell them about the differences in all the modern art work called "limited edition print" these days - (no judgements about any of them)... and then, there's the " be-backers" as we called them they seem to want to buy something but maybe dont have the money or whatever they say- "i'll be back! " as if they were going to dash away , scoop up some money , and bring it back to you, you never see them again... welcome to John i would like to know more about ' art as money ' do you have your book s on a website we can look at ? and dont the wood blocks, in the pack that Sharen mentions, make scratches on each other ? or maybe they carve themselves that way , and you like it -only joking ! I can certainly tell by the Rhino that you are indeed a wood engraver. All that wonderful detail and graceful lines. Great page. I enjoyed every minute of your struggle. My struggle ended in the round file. Then another struggle, too late. The story is told and please excuse my pelican. He just could not get out of the wood. Anxiously awaiting the results of the Endangered Species prints. Should be interesting. Plus Dan's special Salon des Refuse. Great going gang. I like the idea of doing prints that have a special meaning to the planet. I get to keep all of the wonderful creatures that slithered in these past few months. Just washed the ink off my hands from the last print. Now all I have to do is let them dry and get them into the mail. I guess I don't qualify for the coveted last to slither award after all. Now I can start obsessing as to wether I begin next years card immediately, or do I have someone slap me on the head a few times to get the blood flow moving, so I can remember 4"x6" much more difficult than 30"x40". Maybe I should take a cue from Demitri (sp?) and do my own thing. Hummmmmmmm! 30"x40" post cards. Y'all have a card file that size, right? Wonderful print and so nice to see the block. I am having a little trouble with one of mine as I decided to do it backwards and print white ink on black paper....so far it is not very inspiring, but I think I need to do a bit more carving. You have convinced me I can pull it out of the fire! I have #9 done but this is the one for the "refuse", at the rate I am going it will be late...but maybe I can get it together and get a print I like. before the final date, there is always overnight express mail.
