The Bismark Brown is a relief ink and the Sepia is an etching ink. I'm not sure why one was substituted for the other, but I'm sure that we didn't do it. Graphic Chemical never substitutes inks, unless the customer has asked for it to happen. It would certainly explain the difference in handling. Optimum drying conditions, huh? I'm not sure I have an answer for that extremely high or extremely low humidity will cause the ink to dry more rapidly or more slowly. As far as whether it's cheaper to purchase direct, that's a tough call. The ink costs are all listed on the web site for reference, and on top of that you've got shipping (about $20 US for the first two pounds and about $3.00 US per pound after that for air parcel post) and potentially customs charges. I would suggest that you look to other distributors in Australia. There are several, but unfortunately our computers at work are down right now. The ones that come off the top of my head include: MES Heidelberg - both in Melbourne Premier - Adelaide Jackson - Perth I know there is one in Queensland or somewhere up North, but the ame escapes me right now. If so, I liked the book as it shows some really good progressive photos showing how to tie barens, etc. Yes that is the book. I found the step by step very interesting. I don't do hanga so it helps me to visualize more clearly what folks are doing. I always want to start making ryhmes with the word hanga. hanna hanga hanga hinna hall..etc. how do you pronounce it. han ga or hang uh or hun guh? I use Van Son inks, = they are rubber based and I use them for everything, Litho, Etching and = relief printing, with good results. I also use Sipca inks, available in = Sydney from the manufacturer.=20 Patricia ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Tue, 08 May 2001 10:06:37 -0700 Subject: [Baren 14398] Re: collaborations I love the idea of collaboration! Horacio Soares Neto and I did a quasi-collaboration a while back. Horacio sent me a black & white image via the computer & I carved and printed blocks from that black & white image. While not a true collaboration - as Horacio just turned me loose with it & said "Do whatever you want" - it was great fun, and I like the print that resulted. You can see & read about it here: http://web-ster.com/Menina I tried to get a collaboration idea started for an exchange - but it went over like a lead balloon. :-) Wanda ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Tue, 08 May 2001 15:07:15 -0500 Subject: [Baren 14399] Re: Baren Digest v15 #1414 Hello, Gary! Enjoyed seeing your print at auction http://www.auctionukiyoe.com/viewitem.cfm?ID=56 and was surprised to make the connection... someone told me you live here in Kansas City? I'd enjoy hearing how you connected with the publisher in Kyoto and how much work they've done for you, or you for them... Like baren-suji (sp?) metal powders, embossing, highlighting woodgrain, and similar? I recall there is one. Any suggestions? I think that one of the best is "Japanese Print Making" by Toshi Yoshida and Rei Yuki. This is the book that was recently on eBay. It can be difficult to find for sale, but at least here in Hawaii nearly every public library branch has a copy. Other than that, try Hiroshi Yoshida's book that Dave has uploaded onto the Baren site. Gayle wrote: This may seem naive, Gary, but it seems if all these people making a print in a collaboration, and especially showing their fine skills at their craft, all names should be on the final piece like when a film shows the credits at the end. Check out some of the Dore illustrations. I'm told he did the drawings and his crew did the work. You generally will find names carved in the lower corners of the engravings. The one on the left is Dore's; the one on the right is the carver's. I am more impressed by his crew than Dore. I guess I have the same opinion of Dale Chihualy's crew. "Collaboration" is such a bureaucratic buzz word these days--arrrghh! I have never found a way--skins, baby oil, whatever--to keep oily ink from drying out in cans, although some inks last longer than others. If you buy the tubes available thru Daniel Smith or Dick Blick and stuff your ink from the can into the tube while the can is still quite fresh, the ink will last considerably longer. You have to be careful not to overstuff the tube and to put a good crimp in the open end once you've stuffed it.
