Gregory, your smooth talking aside.(thanks for the effort) I am really having a hard time with this. I have been the object of some of the vicious prejudice that comes from religious belief. I have my personal spiritual beliefs and I am not sure that I will be able to participate in a show that could be interpreted as support for a belief system that must have a "bad" for good to exist. I will read the Dalai Lama's commentary and then see if there is someway I can participate without feeling I am taking a manure bath. I have done a wood engraving - (when say "wood-engraving" i'm talking of an engraver made in wood or lino or Brazilian " " all them cutten with "goivas" in U , V, knife, and printed on a press) with a Biblicat l theme - the Last supper - I have done it some years ago, my wife asked me to work with this themethis printe has participated in a show of the State University in my city in the Museum of Art , the show was called " UDESC no CIC" - University of the State of Saint Catherine in the Integrated Culture Center ( a beautiful place where it stays the Museum of Art of SC, other rooms for shows, the Museum of Image and sound, has a small cinema, and Theather for 700 people, and 'oficinas' (workplaces) of xylo, lytho, handmade paper, desing, painting, music, dance....). Curiosity: I put a little dog in my print, - well, a dog in "The last supper"!, and after that I read in the press that the last thing it was cleaned and appeared in Leonardo's LS was a dog!- It' a "creative printmaking" ( sosaku hanga ). Could I put my Last supper in Baren or you to see, how? Best wishes, Murilo, Florianópolis. ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 08:58:58 -0700 Subject: [Baren 14685] Re: Bible theme Just a caution, folks. Please remember to be respectful of each other - even while discussing things that may make you uncomfortable & grumpy! Murilo, I'm sure that bareners would love to see a photo of your "Last Supper" print. If you can send a photo of it to me, or have someone take a picture of it with a video camera & send the jpeg file to me - we will get it up on the web site somewhere so everyone can see it. It sounds really intriquing! Jean & Patricia, I see no reason that your prints would be rejected. I think you are letting your insecurities (and, boy oh boy, we all have those) get the best of you. I don't think that Gregory means for this to be a regular Baren exchange - - but a submission of prints to be a collection for a show or shows. I think it sounds like an exciting idea - apart from the gospel being a rich source of images for anyone of any religious belief - I am not a religious person, but would be more than willing to participate. I think Princess said it best: "Baren Rocks!!!!!!!" I'm hoping to hear from John soon about questions I have, and hopefully the archives will be up and rolling again, but then there'll be another delay between June 12 and 22 when I'll be at Isle Royale up in Lake Superior (where the wolves are!). John says I can catch up when I get back. Thanks for your patience, everyone. I am glad I finally have a job on Baren. I have wanted to do something for so long. Did I really have so much to share? In keeping with the one a day allowable postings: Last month I put out a call for any Barener who would be on my travel route. I had the opportunity to actually meet, eyeball to eyeball, three Bareners--Greg Carter, Dan Dew, and Jean Norman Chase (Sarasota Jean). I loved those experiences, sharing ways of working, personal art histories, and the individualities of each. That can't be beat. Highly recommended! Am I a Baren Groupie, or what? I vote for melocolia as Durers as his best work in print. I don't think the religious subject of a print exchange would more than likely offend some one. If i expressed my views on religion in an honest manner i would offend members of my own family much less others i don't even know. I don't feel i can do art that is not true to my beliefs so i tend to avoid this subject. Politics and religion usually raise blood pressure. I still vote for flora or maybe money as art. john of the furry press ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 18:43:22 EDT Subject: [Baren 14694] Re: baren s worth and purpose/gospel theme show cutting the wood is the thing that unites us and it is my favorite part of it anyway. I work in the formschnider tradition but in many ways it is very similiar in its organization to the work done in Japan. I enjoyed the diverse style of the show in Skokie and this diversity is a VERY good thing. If i could just cut blocks and have someone else print them I would be ok with that. I also enjoy printing but the cutting is the most important part and that all the different styles of wood cuts and wood engravings. Just as the wood cuts in Japan today use all the different methods so can we. shalom john of the furry press ------------------------------ From: "John and Michelle Morrell" Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 14:45:59 -0800 Subject: [Baren 14695] "Lurkers" charset="iso-8859-1" I think "lurkers" should be referred to as "stragglers." I've just finished catching up on a month's worth of mail, and understand completely why some people don't comment at all. There is something about not being on the same page and knowing it that makes you want to keep silent! As for ancient history--I really enjoyed Dave's web page on the process of making a print. It was gorgeous, and I learned a few technical goodies to try, altho I do not do hanga printing. John Amoss, the search engine for the archives is fantastic! I did a search on shark skin, remembering the seemingly endless postings on it a while back, and got 4 pages of citations. This is certainly going to beat going thru post by post to try to find some vaguely remembered reference. ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 19:08:25 EDT Subject: [Baren 14696] Re: time to vote for #11 floral ------------------------------ From: Tariq and Princess Rashid Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 19:18:16 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14697] Re: time to vote for #11 cemetary Princess ------------------------------ From: "Garth Hammond" Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 18:09:01 -0600 Subject: [Baren 14698] Re: time to vote for #11 charset="iso-8859-1" Bea, I suggest you eliminate the ones and repost to see how it sorts out. Yes, it works very well... and thanks for the great improvement in finding (and guiding others to) the resources we now have. The search engine can also, of course, locate Baren members, if you input a name... Which is a small "problem" maybe new archivist Wanda can look at. I input my own name into the Baren Search and, of course, the not-so-many posts I've sent came up... what ALSO came up though were some replies when people used my e-mail post to Baren as a reply via the "Reply" button... and a small segment from some of these letters also appears - a few quite out of keeping with my way of speech on the net (no disrespects to the original writer but I do not write "...I'm outa here bloody stupid suggestion....").In this case, though, directly below this quote is "From:" and my name and e-mail address - yet the letter was TO Baren (not me directly) and had nothing in the contents that I'd written. I'm not sure if this can be solved (deletion of the original sender's address before going to the archives?) but I'd like some way to disassociate from comments that could be, however indirectly, considered mine in the archives. This, of course isn't just for [Baren] - we're open to the whole Web through ALL the archived posts we write. So it's all "out there" too... Just a point... check it out and see what I mean...
