Baren Digest Tuesday, 5 June 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1444 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: GWohlken Date: Mon, 04 Jun 2001 09:46:25 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14709] Re: Baren Digest V15 #1443 Princess, I tried the waterbased ink from Daniel Smith and found it difficult to work with. I had to re-ink the board many times to get an impression. I tried Graphic Chemical's water soluble ink and like it very well. You have to use a vehicle (which they sell) with it to keep it moist and workable, but it works beautifully. In fact, I'll be using some this week as I want to make a few extra prints for the gallery show I'm in that opens on Saturday. Since they dry so fast, I can make a few extra and put them in sleeves for the art bin. * * * The biblical collaboration -- the book is poetry whether we "believe" in it or not. >From a storytelling point of view, there's a lot of imagery in there to play with. Just because we make a piece of art using imagery we glean from a story, doesn't mean we subscribe to it as truth. There are some who do and some who don't. Stories reach us at a deeper level than surface. Take fairy tales and myths -- If I do an image of fairies dancing around a tree and luring children with cherries, it doesn't mean I believe they do that, but psychologically there is something interesting going on here worth exploring. I don't think Greg is asking people to put together a religious exhibit, but rather a creative exploration of the stories from a collaboration of ancient writings which have been put together and called the bible. Haven't all of us felt at some time in our life as abandoned as Job? There is humanity in those books of the bible, filled with so much suffering, so much injustice, so much hatred, so much patience, so much love, What about those things? Slavery isn't just what happened in recent history, look at the ancient Israelites under the rule of Egypt. These writings are the history of a people. Yet, below all that is the humanity of us all. It seems worth exploring. Thought I would share a few points, things I learned: - - What you like may be very different from what the public likes. I truly love my portraits, so what does everyone at the opening and in the guest book like? All the landscapes and animal prints, go figure. - - No matter how many people you invite, all the ones you didn't think would show up do and all the people you wanted to show up don't. - - Someone won't like the types of food or drink you offer. - - By the end of the day, you'll have to clean the glass on almost all your prints for all the fingerprints all over them. - - People will sign your guest book, but it will be illegible and you can't read their name or address, if they leave one. It was a good opening, lots of friends showed up and a good time was had by all. I just returned from a conference in Dallas for = artists who were also christians. I want you to know that much of their = biblical-based work would not have necessarily been interpreted that way = at first glance. Many Barener's want to steer clear of controversy, which = I can understand, but art is often controversial. Whether or not we ascribe to any particular religious or spiritual belief = is somewhat irrelevant to this discussion. The theme of the gospels is a = fine (and broad) one. One of the speakers at the conference I was at had = curated a show on "Jesus" (which was a somewhat broad theme in the end) = for the year 2000. This was obviously appropriate considering the Roman = calendar which nearly the whole world uses. Like it or not, most of us = here are Westerners and are therefore influenced by Western culture--a = large part of the images we look back on are religious and specifically = christian. Since this organization really has its roots in Eastern methods of = printmaking (and image making) it would probably even be appropriate for = us to do a kama sutra exchange or folio. I guess some would jump at that = chance and others would shrink from it, but I bet it wouldn't ever be = shown in the Skokie Library. Anyway, there should be no fear in being = artists first and foremost here. The artist's job is to use technique, = which we obviously discuss here quite a bit, and idea/interpretation to = come up with something new. We live in a pluralistic and postmodern world = where "There is nothing new under the sun" (to use another scriptural = reference), and we are all adapting and appropriating images. Let us make = that the focus. Obviously, my religious convictions make this particularly appealing to = me. However, I am, as an art history instructor, always interested in the = more Eastern things people are doing in exchanges. As a somewhat separate = project from Baren I think there is not an issue here. This is a good = place to start the conversation, and perhaps it needs to move off list = soon (as even my comments here may or may not be seen as thoroughly = appropriate). I would like to say, that since I am the gallery director = for a christian university, I am very interested in this project. I do not = seek to bring in work that solely reflects a christian viewpoint or theme, = but I think this would be more than appropriate for our space--especially = with the variety of interpretation that would come forth--challenging = preconceived and long accepted notions. I think it would even be quite = possible to convince my gallery board to approve the acquisition of such a = project so that it would have a permanent home on our campus. I'd love to = be part of this. But enough of this, back to the studio. It is more of a personal idea where he is looking for participation from the baren membership...but not a print exchange per say....as such a personal project/idea...In my opinion is up to Greg to make the rules and have total control of the project. Tyrus writes: "... it would probably even be appropriate for us to do a kama sutra exchange or folio. I guess some would jump at that chance and others would shrink from it, but I bet it wouldn't ever be shown in the Skokie Library. Anyway, there should be no fear in being artists first and foremost here." Yes, totally agree with your last sentence here! As far as the library is concerned, they probably are not going to be showing ANY exhibits at all for the better part of the next two maybe three years...major remodeling will start soon including a new third floor and complete restructuring of the place....so this current Baren show maybe the last to grace it's walls in quite a while. Re Skokie, long known for it's Jewish population & background it has evolved into a multi-cultural village. There is a very good mix of people from all over the world here...just like at Baren. It is very satisfying to me to be able to showcase the diversity of our group as John Center mentioned...printmakers from all parts of the world, young and old, beginners & pros, oily & water-based...all sharing a common love for woodblocks. Speaking of shows..print selection, etc.......as I mentioned before when putting the Skokie exhibit together my goal was that of promoting woodblock printmaking, the Baren group and the printmakers. To that effect, we have once again a very large exhibit with a very large representation of our membership. The six exchanges covered are: #5 Ju nin, to iIro", (Ten People, Ten colors) #6 Special size (1X2), no theme #7 The Comedy of Life #8 Oban size, no theme #9 Endangered Species 2001 New Year Card Exchange - The Year of the Snake Here is a list of all participants in the Skokie exhibit by first name alpha....and their prints on display. Please update your cv's as needed. The more exchanges you were involved with, chances are you have more prints on display. Dan mentioned his guest book addresses were often illegible. When people see a guestbook, their first reaction often has to do with leaving their mark. "I was here. I thought this was a wonderful show." This doesn't require a complete or legible postal address. The key is letting them know you would like to continue the dialogue after the exhibition. Place a small sign near the guestbook like Please sign our guestbook. Include your postal address or email here if you would like to receive further mailings about this artists' work/ to be included on our invitation list for future exhibitions. or Have a free draw - People will write their address legibly because they want to be contacted if they win. You can include a checkbox for them to indicate if they wish to receive future mailings from you. or Have a business card draw - Always legible. : ) People are often wary about giving out their contact information. Respect that caution and tell them what you want and why you want it. Those who are really interested will respond and you won't end up bothering people unecessarily. Hope this comes in useful for someone.
