Baren Digest Tuesday, 12 June 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1453 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 10:39:59 EDT Subject: [Baren 14800] endangered species Thanks for the quote, Julio, it's even more horrendous to think that humans are the primary cause for many, if not most, species' extinction. Even primates, our closest relatives, are being slaughtered. Recently I was horrified to hear the small number of lowland gorillas left in the world. Anyway, as for the flat type of animals that we make out of wood, paper and pigment, etc, I just sent off 20 of my framed "animals" of various sizes (they're on the way to Chicago). It was a little sad & worrisome to say good bye to them, but I know it's good to get them out in the world and I have a lot more room in my studio now! :) best wishes all Sarah ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 08:08:42 -0700 Subject: [Baren 14801] Re: Baren Digest V15 #1452 charset="iso-8859-1" Sorry for my recent grouchiness. School is finally out, at least until summer school starts. I'm afraid serving as a middle school teacher did not bring out the best in me. Am I clear now, that the new exchange starts July 1 and is called "Flora?" What is the finally determined size? Here is a letter to Ann Phillipi, in response to an inquiry from her. My mail to her kept bouncing. I recently subbed for my previous master teacher in her art class. Knowing I am a printmaker, i guess she planned the lesson plan for me being there. The beginning lesson was to trace a pattern in black and white, in this case a simple design of fish and flowers. Then enlarge the pattern, either just by eyeballing it, or else use a grid. It should fit within 1/2 sheet of paper (half of an 8 1/2 x 11" sheet). The kids were provided with a fine grain type of type of bubble wrap that is used to wrap China plates and cups. You can see through it well enough to trace the pattern. It is very easy to cut with baby sissors. Then glue it to cardboard with white glue. Then paint with tempera and print. Later I used the plate I made to print fish patterns in acrylic paint on an old table in my back yard. As for collagraph: use mat board, and draw the pattern on the mat board. The area you want to be dark should be cut in outline with an Xacto knife or mat knife, but not all the way through: just score it. Peel off the top layer. The layer which is exposed is rough and will hold ink.. You can also cut patterns and shapes from copy paper and card stock etc. and paste them on the mat board with white glue. Then paint all with acrylic gloss medium. When it is all dry, you can roll it up with rollers and Speedball ink, and print it by placing the white paper face down on the plate and going over the back with a wooden or other spoon. When the print is dry, you can paint with water color. Sometimes it works well to print two plates. The first is a basic color, then the second plate is a pattern in black. Other wise, you could start right off with linoleum block printing.
