I am the proud owner of "Block Party", as Meagan and I exchanged prints a while back (I sent her a print I did of a baby baboon). I wish her all the best of luck, a wonderful and promising young artist! best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ From: Greg Carter Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 15:12:35 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14916] giclees can be original prints. I admit i am swamped and have not read everything that has been posted on the subject but I just wanted to say that I strongly belive that any image that is created in the computer and printed via giclee or any other digital printing process is an original print. I have the same problem with reproductions that everybody else does but that does not mean that the process itself is an invalid means of expression. I saw some prints at the recent Southern Graphics council conference that really impressed me. They were combining ink jet prints with relief prints and they were just as visually interesting as any other type of print. The relief plate was very interesring because it was made photographically by sandblasting the wood with silkscreen photo emulsion on it. I have also seen presentations by Cone Editions in Vermont were they are very creative with how they manipulated the Giclee's. Cone was a traditional printer that left it for computer printing and is very talented in the field. All I am saying is to remeber that artists are creative and can use any medium as a creative form of expression even the Giclee. Yes, he once did a very nice edition of potato prints ( ! ) and now might be considered as a new breed of master printer. The prints arrived just now in Chicago! They are beautiful and speak loudly for the creatures and causes they represent. I'm delighted to have each one! Thank you, all! Megan is wearing 'seven league boots'! What a wonderful print! Thank you, Dan, for thinking up and coordinating this 'exchange-extra', and for making this treasure of a package possible! That way we can make, for example, a booklet explaining woodcut and linocut, and have a Ebay page keyed on those words, with redirects to woodcut urls, woodcut artists and perhaps even interactive pages like the M.O.M.A put up. We could then partner up with, for example, The Monotype List, and they could put together a separate print info section, with the same foreword. Using the same strategy of redirects to sister urls, and creating a new and separate Ebay page, within a decided format, we can effectually increase our messages' presence on the web. We could eventually have Ebay pages about all the 'fine art' methods in use by artist/printmakers and be assured that any surfing buyer will come across our main message; that they need to investigate a bit before plunking down big money for ANY print! All of these booklets could be printed up, on demand, in the event of actual orders, by a single party. We might also think about also setting up sister pages on the web for people using search engines other than Ebay. We could undertake to 'load up' the number of hits on these pages so that search engines that read the number of hits and sets priority by such methods, will pull up our pages in the first few selections. I do not think that this is illegal, as we are not committing a fraud, these are our own pages, and perhaps a web savvy member could write up a bit of software for members to use to make say, 10 effortless hits on our pages each time we connect to the internet. I believe we can get our message out and benefit our member artist/printmakers who make and sell prints, as well as those web surfing shoppers who are looking for and care about real art, without resorting to demonising glicee sellers. There are plenty of people who do not mind buying their product and we should not mind that their preferences are not our own. I do believe in live and let live, but not at the expense of standing quite when people are being misled. We, as a group simply need to recognise the low cost, proactive power of the internet which exist, beyond posting forums, personal pages and print exchanges, and resolve to use it to every ethical advantage that we can. If we keep a narrow focus and work from a point of view that the message is, 'prints of fine art are very different from real art, fine or otherwise', we will have done good service to ourselves and the shopping public. Success should be measured, not by hits on web sites, increased sells by members or aggravation inflicted on marketeers of Iris prints and posters, but by our resolve to follow through, as a group, and have our say made public to a wider audience on an issue so many of us have strong feelings about. What the public does with our message is their concern. Cheers, Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C. USA - ----- Original Message ----- From: "bemason" > The yes votes are piling up, only one no so far. I'm so excited! What a fantastic group of prints this is. Every one has its own special focus and story to tell. And Dimitris, yours was worth waiting for! Dan, thank you so much for all of the hard work ( and hours of frustration) that you have put in to get this exchange put together. You're a real "trooper," as my mom would say. All in all I think this endeavor was a success. When can we do it again? (Oh yeah, gotta do exchange 10 first...) That way they would not have to sign in, place the order and wait for it to arrive. I have seen a couple of pages where the bid price is one cent, [put in place to notify customers that the seller is on vacation or something.] I guess some minimum bid price is required for a listing.
