Baren Digest Sunday, 24 June 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1469 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bill H Ritchie Jr" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 06:36:02 -0700 Subject: [Baren 14945] DVD 'Zine charset="iso-8859-1" Thanks, everyone who replied to my DVD question. Today I'm doing a double-demo at Daniel Smith Inc in Bellevue, WA, so I'm heading into the sunrise. (It's east). Before I go, I want you all to know my goal: I'll cut and print some wood, then I'll zap it to: In about an hour! Wish me good connections, folks. Meanwhile, it's on my mind to propose a kind of virtual university for teaching/learning, research and practice of multimedia arts, based on the ancestral arts, crafts and design of all print making herstories and histories. It would be tuition-free--the first instance of a free art education on-line resource (but obviously owing to the success of baren in its already doing it.) I love the way baren works, in all senses of the expression. Since the DVD and CD/ROM before it were copied from the size and shape of the baren, it seems fitting that I consider the DVD as a publishing medium. One person asked for the loan of a DVD example, but for an iMac. I think what I have here is limited to PC/playable, but that's because it's a cheap one, based on MS Windows. A little research at www.dazzle.com would clear that up. I'd offer to send everyone a free DVD, but somehow I think I might regret paying the shipping and handling--even though the USPS makes it pretty low cost. On the other hand, I don't want to shirk my duty to all the peace-loving, print loving people out there in baren-land who want to live and let live among the practitioners of these arts, crafts and design systems based on printing. What to do? I dunno. More ideas are welcome. BTW, I can send a link to a 2-minute sample from one of my DVDs when I locate it again--it's on the Webcast Theater site, buried amidst other peoples' stuff under ANNOUNCEMENTS if I remember right. Now I'm off to KINKO's for the cover of yesterday's successful test: Kurosaki Prints Again (a remake of a 1980 videotape) to show the group at Daniel Smith today (on a notebook PC). That cover, BTW, is also on-line as a PDF file at Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 01:28:59 Subject: [Baren 14946] Re: salon des refuse' I received my ÔSalon De RefuseÔ prints - good news is they are a great bunch of prints. The bad news is they were damaged in shipping. The thin priority mail envelope, which they were shipped in had been folded completely over creasing the prints inside. I wish that the heavy reusable double corrugated print box that I had provided had been used, then this would not have been possible. Apparently, it was not large enough to accommodate DimitrisÕs over size print. I was so disappointed about the prints at first I thought they were all damaged, then finally brought myself to give them a inspection. Some turned out to have escaped unscathed! Damaged are; Jeanne Norman Chase, Megan Dew, Bea Gold, Dimitris Grammatikopulos, and Barbara PateraÕs. Prints that are creased but look like they may possibly press out are; Kris Alder, Dan Dew, Sharen Linder, Wanda Robertson, Frank Trueba (frogs). Would any of you printmakers from the list of prints that were damaged would be willing to swap a creased one for an uncreased one, (not a very good trade I know) or what do people in the exchange group think about me swapping the damaged prints with the extra set of prints we produced? I would pay postageÉ? Also any body out there with special tricks for uncreasing prints? Dimitris, your print is very nice, but next exchange can you PLEASE Ð PLEASE Ð PLEASE make your print the right size for the print exchange specifications?!!! A great time and Jan Telfer was a delight, I hated to see her leave this afternoon. We could get into a lot of trouble together, we have similar weaknesses and interests. Maybe a good thing we are so far apart! Jan is on her way to San Francisco to visit Marco Flavio and Jean Eger-Womack and then on home to Perth, AU at the bottom of the world. I was counting to Jan how many bareners, past and present listees, I had met personally and the list is now 17, this must be a record of some kind!!!!! What a joy it has been. Depending on the ink and paper, you usually spray the back of the print lightly with water, place the print on a blotter, lay another blotter on top and keep sandwiching prints until you have a stack of them. Then weight the stack down with a board and a heavy object, I use books. Change the blotters after 30 minutes and weight again at least overnight. When printing on damp paper this is also the way you make sure the prints are flat. Changing the blotters is critical to keep the prints drying flat and to inhibit them being so wet they mold in the blotters. Check them daily to make sure they do not need to be changed again. When the prints are dry they should be flat and smooth. Different papers require more water, usually the heavier the paper the more water needed for spraying. On an evening of incredibly heavy traffic, we finally assembled at Pegasus. Ten of us enjoyed meeting one another and dining on excellent Greek food! Then we drove to the historic mansion that houses Woman Made Gallery Meeting Sarah there was great, and her prints were wonderful! The scale of some of them surprised us...they're really large! ...on the computer screen prints all look about the same size! Some of us met again this morning to see the second Skokie Baren Show! (The Skokie exhibit was perfect--as usual! Great job, Julio!) --and we talked, and had a wonderful show and tell! We learned a lot seeing John Center's incredible books! What impressive carving and printing! Julio brought some lovely old Japanese prints. Gayle and Jim, Sue and Lori, Dean and Susan from Graphic, John, Julio, Sarah, Don and I enjoyed meeting one another! Getting together like this is great! "....This is a scene of water in the moonlight with a pair of rocks jutting out of the water , joined by a rope bridge, with a torii gate at the top of the larger rock, perhaps a Shinto shrine off the Kyoto coast? Seems to be harder to find Japanese woodblock prints depicting outdoor senes or landscapes than other subjects. In the original glazed frame, probably framed in the 1920's. The visible portion of the print measurs approx. 7 by 9 & 1/2 inches, which would make it chuban sized. I am selling this print as is, exactly in the estate condition as I bought it. I have not removed it from the frame, so I can't say whether there are any printer's marks on the edges. The winning bidder gets the privilege of removing it from the frame. However I have examined it through the glass with a lighted loupe and can assure you it is a genuine woodblock impression, and not a "print". I try to describe my auction items accurately, but if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. .." Now I am confused ! So I used an alternate site. If anyone is interested, the demo result I sent to the Web (part of my dog-and-pony act) is at: http://www.seanet.com/~ritchie/mydemo.html There was a young woman there--8-year old Stephanie--who took away this quick print. The demo worked! I think I got across the essential of Japanese-style woodcut to a small group, and in the last ten minutes, took a digital snapshot, converted the image to .GIF, and had it on the Web. The thin > priority mail envelope, which they were shipped in had been folded Kate, this is so sad - please give us your snail mail address & I am sure that most of us "refusees" will send another print to you. My package of prints came through fine & dandy and I have peered at them at least 3 times in the last week. They are all delightful prints - I would like to thank everyone who participated and especially Dan for collating the whole thing & a special thank you to Meaghan for that wonderful print of hers in the collection. What a great and special thing we have here on Baren! Dinner at Barbara's last night was wonderful - Jan Telfer is really a neat, witty, pretty & delightful person! Now I want to go to Australia! Add it to the list of wants. Kent Kirkpatrick & his wife Suzy (sp?) were there & Alex Prentiss, the new owner of McClain's & Sharri LaPierre, president of Northwest Print Council & our host & hostess: Barbara & Lee Mason. A good print & book viewing time was had by all. I had a long long drive home, but it was worth every minute to get together with this group. Lee even gave us an impromptu clarinet concert. Cheers!
