They were really interesting character studies. I also enjoyed the spare use of color as it did not detract from the sensuous line that created these images. I was refilling the toners in my ink jet and fell in love with the process colors, their clean look and brightness! The way they never ever scrub out of your hands... Anyhow, I had some process etching inks and started playing around with the transparencies. They are fun to make. Rainbow roll is the oily "bokashi." A rainbow roll is achieved by laying out two (or more) inks on the slab side by side, nearly touching. When the roller picks up the ink, it naturally blends the two together in the middle. You can help this process by rolling at slight angles. The ends of the roller hopefully just pick up the clean colors. When you load the block, the inks blend from one color to another. Best results are achieved with very transparent inks that blend into a third color (yellow/red, for example). You can also fade a color by laying out a color and transparent base on the slab. The roller blends the color to a fade. Enjoy! So I shall blow the horn a little bit more, and post this message weekly for about another month. Interest have shown so far: Jean E., Jeanne N., Dan D., Barbara P., Maria A., event. Gayle W. and my-self If the ex-change will go ahead I offer to organize it In regard of the mode, it is eventually wise to do this first ex-change with prints already accomplished. Eventually everybody could announce what he/she has to offer, and eventually it is possible to arrange that everybody could get what he/she is looking for. This should be possible, if not too many participants are involved. But this is just a first idea, my two cents. Other proposals are welcome. But please send suggestions off-line, as all the other silently carving Bareners may not want to be disturbed in their dreams. I promise to keep all participants and the Baren-Forum well informed. It may be more work for the coordinator but maybe there could be another or co-coordinator handling the responsibility of the Part II exchange. For those on the waiting list, the part II portion would initially be filled by them. However, the waiting list to the waiting list.... :-) should probally participate in the Swap. I think the Swap Shop is an excellent alternative for those of us who can't, for whatever reason, participate in the exhanges. From what I hear we need the support that option more. Do you want more themed exchanges? Would you like a smal print exchange. A young people exchange? Duplicate exchanges if one fills very fast? Akemi Ohira ------------------------------ From: b.patera@att.net Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 04:48:44 +0000 Subject: [none] Hi Bea, There sure has been a lot of discussion about the exchanges. And I like several of the ideas that have been proposed I would like to see a large print exchange put into place. Perhaps, twice a year, with a limit of 15... but unlimited sign up. By that I mean that we could sign up and then break the list into sections with 15 people in each... seperate coordinators, of course. And if the exchange was themed they could all be shown together. Would hate to have to wait out two exchanges but would not like to do more than 30 prints for an echange. However, I see no reason why we can't run a double exchange, especially if the exchange is themed. If there are say, 15 or more extra sign ups and someone willing to coordinate why not run a second and concurrent exchange? The Salon d'Refuse is great but why not make it official and if the same format is used, they can, again, all be shown as a unit. That way all of us exchange junkies can keep on participating. I think your idea of a kids print exchange is great. I would be willing to approach local schools with the idea. Am mulling over ideas of how it could work... whether individually (each child getting their own set of prints) or scholastically, with schools or groups exchanging with other groups. Would be a lot of work but well worth it. I'm for almost anything that furthers the arts. To all Baren Members, Home again, Home again, Jiggety Jig!!! It has taken me this long to read the Baren newsletters....30 odd!! Well, I am here in body, but my spirit is still lurking somewhere in the great beyond!! To all Baren Members here is a little insight into my wonderful northern hemisphere experience where the water does go round the wrong way down the plug hole and light switches turn "up" for "on" and "down" for "off" !! I have just returned from a month in Canada and the USA from 29th May to 30th June. I attended Graham Scholes' (pronounced Sscc-O-llllls!!) Bootcamp on Vancouver Island for the first 10 days + (I lost count - had to rely on daily diary notes) then recouperated in Vancouver and a Rocky Mountaineer Railtour through Jasper and Banff and back to Vancouver before heading south to Seattle, Portland and San Francisco and back to Perth. Bootcamp was fantastic - Six guys and me! I had no competition, so could just be myself and that I did! We all worked hard and played hard - check this out: < http://members.home.net/woodblocks/2001bootcamp.html > then click on "Lets go to the Serious Stuff" just underneath that page or click on: < http://members.home.net/woodblocks/2001wkspcasual.html > I learnt a lot from Graham on the Art of Traditional Japanese woodblock printing and had the fine examples of his work on the studio walls surrounding us. Fantastic Bootcamp...and I am going again. Marco has been three times, Kent and John twice from our little group. But take your holidays to Canada, at this time and book in to Bootcamp...you won't regret it. To Kent Kirkpatrick, Marco Flavio Marinucci, John Root, Bill Bird, Richard Stockham and my tablemate, Richard Brown, thank you. You made me feel very welcome and I really had a fantastic time...my heart is still there with my 3 Amigos and the 3 Day Boys. And "hello" again to Paul Romaniuk...great to meet you too. To Marnie and my soulmate, thank you. A wonderful Hostess - what more can I say... I then bussed it (a US Greyhound Experience of a lifetime!) to Seattle to stay with Barbara and Dennis Patera, to Portland to Barbara and Lee Mason and the Portland Printmakers - Kent (again) and Susie, Wanda, Sharri and Alex, then to SanFrancisco to Marco (again) and Alison and Jean and Howard Womack. I will never forget your hospitality and the warmth that these people showed me in the USA. The world is growing ever smaller with the use of technology and the warmth of Printmakers' welcoming hearts. Love you all and Thank you. Thank you to Baren and Print Australia for making this experience possible. "Must go and put my lippie on!" Jan Perth, Western Australia, Australia - check it out on your maps - it is on the opposite side of Australia to Sydney!
