I don't know how you found time to do all that with your summer activities, but you are appreciated for all the work, and for such an interesting collection of articles. It was nice seeing Cleveland's Michael Verne featured. I have had the pleasure of visiting his airy and peaceful gallery of beautiful prints as it is about 25 miles from where I live. Thank you to both Philip Smith and David Stones for their suggestions for sharpening larger tools. I discovered I was indeed holding the tools too high during sharpening and am working to get the angle lower to the stone. John Center mentioned in a recent baren posting that he had read a book about the Hatch Show Prints out of Nashville. Last night we were at a concert nearby and one of the local bands (The Hillbilly Idols) was selling posters made by none other than Hatch. I thought the $3 price was a good deal since the poster was printed from handset type and woodcuts. Sounds like an interesting process, but a bit too poisonous for me! Yesterday I printed a rather large print, approx 20" x 25" on hanga-shi paper from Hiromi Paper (www.hiromipaper.com). The paper worked quite well, and comes in nice big sheets (25" x 38") and costs about $3 a sheet. It's made out of wood pulp and recycled washi, and has a neutral ph. Not fancy paper, but fine for those on a budget! best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 12:11:04 EDT Subject: [Baren 15224] Re: Baren Digest New Baren Suji very good price as some of them are selling for the same price as prints ------------------------------ From: Daniel Dew Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 12:20:57 -0400 Subject: [Baren 15225] Sticky Paper I'm having an issue with my paper and ink. I usually print with Speedball ink and extender. I have been using cherry woodblocks, lightly sealed and permanent marker for drawing. I have this problem only with the the Hosho paper (which I love by the way). The ink seems to stick to the paper or at least it seems that way to me. The paper is very flat when I start, but when I am pulling the paper from the block it seems that it is coming off "fuzzy" and the block gums up after a while. Anyone else experience this problem? dan dew ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 09:24:23 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15226] new editor Julio! BRAVO!!!! I think I've done a pretty good job using those kiddy inks. They are not bad really, just have to get use to how they work. And when you learn on your own as I did, you learn to work with what you got. All info received so far I agree with. Problem is usually due to: - - Ink too sticky, aka tachy; solution is to add one of the recommended additives or Dan Smith's Miracle Gel. I found Graphic's works better with other inks or mixed inks (I'm a brand-mixin' kind of a gal). Don't add too much or your ink will never dry; as in never, ever. - - Paper is not sized or not sized enough. Solution: you can either size the paper or try the additive first and see how it goes. I work with handmade papers all the time and found I really don't need to size paper if I use the gel additive, and I have worked with some seriously fragile papers. Speedball inks work fine, you are right. But do yourself a favor some time and try Graphics and especially Rembrandt's for there is no substance more ssssssennnssssuousssss than good printing ink. IMHO only. Ink is the least of a printmaker's expense, and I print a LOT. Paper, however, can be a credit card buster, although not as much as matting/framing materials. OUCH. Health and tackyless inks to all, Maria <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria@mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Sunnffunn@aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 20:03:08 EDT Subject: [Baren 15236] Re: Big Print Exchange I have had an idea I want to use for a large collage type print, I was going to use Linoleum block. Would that be okay for the big print? I know I swore i would not get into another exchange with the chaos of selling a house and all this boating and obligations. I use the small flat pads with a handle, used for painting straight lines on walls, found in the section where paint rollers are sold. Cheap and very good for this purpose. I like hosho and it works. Enjoy, Bea Gold ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V16 #1500 *****************************
