Baren Digest Monday, 6 August 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1512 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Eger" Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 16:54:41 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15324] Visit from Ruth Leaf I certainly am lucky to be living near San Francisco and thus having Baren visitors from all over the planet. My latest visitor was Ruth Leaf, who spent the afternoon with me yesterday. She gave me some great pointers on how to improve my woodcuts. We went to see the annual Works on Paper exhibition at the Berkeley Art Center. There weren't many people in the gallery, so I guess they are desperate for publicity and visitors. I wonder why. The show runs through August 31. It has computer stuff, but it's not very YOUNG. It would have been nice to have the juror's or judges' name on the invitation. Usually people are quite proud to be a juror for shows. Toru Sugita had a very nice etching. I liked the inkwash bicycle parts tacked to the wall in 12 parts (I think there were 12), but not enough to purchase it from the BAC. I wondered if I could put 12 horse parts up there. After all, Susan Rothenberg got away with just the horse's leg for years, and I have a whole horse, so it ought to be a blockbuster, right? Diana Jacobs' art has taken a new direction. There were some terrific big digital photographs they called Iris prints. I don't remember if there were any woodcuts in the show. I put a memento of Ruth's visit on my web site, maybe for inclusion in BarenSujii, if Ruth and Maria say OK, to be followed by an interview some day, if I ever have any time after school starts. You never know what is going to spark your creativity when your committee starts telling you that you can't do this and that in art, like use parts of a photo that you didn't take yourself. http://www.jeaneger.com/ruth/ Jean ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V16 #1512 *****************************
