Baren Digest Sunday, 16 September 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1557 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: barebonesart Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 13:10:29 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15701] Re: Baren Digest V16 #1556 Sharen, Thank you for the lovely link. Sharri ------------------------------ From: "Gregory Robison" Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 23:04:51 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15702] News from Scotland Dear Bareners I fully support the idea of a collection of prints somehow commemorating the heroism in New York and would be happy to organize an exhibition of these prints here in Edinburgh. This would be a powerful show even if it were limited to a tribute to the emergency services, but it could also be an artistic statement about the triumph of pluralistic, inclusive community over destructive intolerance or some other broader theme. I have been somewhat distracted here and am not sure who is organizing this show, but would be happy to communicate off list if you like. Here in Scotland my wife and I have been at the center of many expressions of grief and solidarity by dignitaries and ordinary people alike. Today we attended a memorial service at St. Giles cathedral, at which my wife, as American Consul (and the only American government employee in this country) read a lesson. She and I received the condolences of all the leaders of the various faith communities of the country -- Bahai, Muslims, Sikhs, Jewish community, various Christian denominations, as well as private citizens, as if we were the family at a funeral. I suppose we were. Yesterday Liane was in Glasgow at a similar and larger event, while I stood in front of our Consulate General here in Edinburgh surrounded by a crowd of ordinary citizens who assembled to sign a book of condolences and deposit flowers, and observe the three minutes of silence. There was not a dry eye in sight, including among the police. I can assure my fellow Americans on this List that there has been an enormous, spontaneous and heartfelt outpouring of support from all walks of life here. I did want to say that on Thursday, my first print class since Tuesday (only three hours into the disaster - this is the class I mentioned earlier this week) I found it very useful to work back into printmaking by talking a bit about the baren group and your ideas about a special portfolio. This allowed us a way to talk more about what has happened as well as to make the point that printmaking is so often social and collaborative and engaged. So, thanks to you all for this forum. Here is my oldest daughter, Erica (16), finding a way to respond http://people.ku.edu/~goddard/response.htm We, in our family, are especially concerned about ethnic stereotyping and civil rights issues now. I am amazed that personally I am more upset as the days go on. Perhaps that is our way of coping, sparing ourselves the full impact until we have had time to believe and adjust. I plan to make my print one of hope, as hard as that will be after all this tragedy. It seems the best way for me to deal with it. We would welcome a print from you, as well as an exhibition. We need to all stand together. There has been a run on flags, I don't think there is one left for sale in this whole city. I think the baren system seems to work so I think it is a good starting point. size 10 by 15 is close to a size i normally work at so i think that would work well I think 30 is a good number esp if you hand print you can always print more. If it was organized as an exchange that would be OK as a starting point. What I would be able is to organize it up to this point. I have no experience in marking and exhibiting. Any help on that would be useful. But first we have to get the prints done and organized. subject; memorial for fireman the main difference would be that we should use it as a benefit John Center john of the furry press ------------------------------ From: "bemason" Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 21:10:10 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15706] - benefit prints John, I think there are enough people on this list that have access to a venue to exhibit the work that we can sell all 30 portfolios. I do think we should do 31 so we have one for our own archives. It seems to me it should be sold as a protfolio and not as individual prints. If we sold it for $3000 a portfolio we would be able to raise $90,000. This is not much money when you consider the need, but from our small group of printers it is probably an enoumous amount. I have no doubt that we will be able to sell all 30 of them. It is the type of thing that any organization or company would be proud to sponsor and instead of just a thanks they will get 30 prints by some very dedicated professional artists. Lets get the prints done and then we can market and exhibit them. If we get more than 30 people wanting to participate, we can do two portfolios. Because it is so soon after the tragedy - would you like to use this avenue to develop or extend the memorial suggested by John Center (john of the furry press)? John could be the coordinator or we could have two separate exchanges, if people would prefer. Exchange #12 and it will open soon for enrollment - October 1st. Theme: none Paper dimension: (to be announced) Sign-up page will be started on October 1st. Sign-up is open to any [Baren] member, but with one qualification: first crack will be given to members who did not participate in the one immediately preceding it. Once this 'early sign-up' period has passed, other members are free to join. The last paper size was oban - for #11, a range of 10 x 15 inches (25.4 x 38 centimeters) to 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches (26.6 x 39.4 centimeters) What size would you like for this exchange? Do you want this to be a regular exchange or would you like to do it as a fund raiser? Some new ideas.
