Baren Digest Friday, 5 October 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1577 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Thu, 4 Oct 01 21:47:01 -0000 Subject: [Baren 15859] Re: Return to Baren Dear Graham, Nice to hear your voice again on Baren with some very helpful advice. "npwilson" - The quality of a Hanga or any multiblock print starts right at the beginning...like building a house...good materials, good foundations, good technique and skill and quality and you can't go wrong. In any printing, good tools, good craftsmanship, plenty of quality practise, good materials and an eye for detail, methodical practises and care and patience and you'll get there eventually. Pactise doesn't make perfect it just develops habits so be continually open to good teaching and self learning. "npwilson" you will be surprised at the amount of information you can pick up from being in an Exchange. Look at the papers that other people have used, if you don't know what they are ask here or "off line" to the people involved. Look at the amount of ink that is used and how it is evenly or so applied, etc. Maybe there is someone who lives close to you that if you would like to watch them print or to come and help you print you could always ask that too...Having a printing "buddy" does wonders for your learning and enthusiasm. But, don't be shy...you are very welcome to ask on Baren. We all started with "a first print" sometime "way back when"...some more "whener than others"!!! It just picks the ink up better than dry. I guess the answer is try it both ways and see what suits you best - then wear it. Dan, I enjoyed your joke. Yesterday I had to deal with a woman who personifies the term that starts with B and ends in CH and I've added to the joke: and he has to share his tent with this woman. Now there is a prison sentence and justice if I ever saw it!! Jeanne - thanks for the tip for the wrist. I'm going to try it. Working with John I have signed on the dotted line for a Firemens Benefit exhibit in the Irvington Public Library display room. 2 weeeks in Feb, from the 12 on. Library Director is very cooperative .The walls allow for the use of pushpins and that will make things much easier. We are working on details-- schedule for sitting, publicity, pricing, number of prints to be sent by each person on the list..... Please keep the good ideas coming . But first you people on this project cut, get the paper from Dean if you want to and print. Send to John in Jan. I just went back and looked at your messages. I'm sending you the rules that we have agreed on but people wanted this to be separate from the Baren Exchanges. You don't have to follow these unless they will work for you. Since in a sense this is not an exchange but a collection, I don't think the rules matter. Let me know if there is something I can do. Bea Baren Exchange Rules September, 2001 The information on the Baren Exchange Program page is very clearly stated. - http://barenforum.org/exchange/index.html Some participants have not adhered to the established Exchange requirements making the coordination of exchanges difficult and not pleasurable while not supporting those who have adhered to the rules. Therefore rather than developing new "rules" we are placing stringent requirements on all for adhering to the formulated regulations. This may result in fewer that the normal 30 print exchange, however we believe that participants will become aware that the exchange requirements are strictly enforced. Members will only join an exchange if they are willing to make the effort required to achieve the exchange goals. 1. Time Deadlines: Participants must plan to send their work in early enough before the deadline so that the print package arrives by the deadline. This may mean sending the work one-week or earlier before the deadline, depending on the method of delivery and the country of origin. Participants from countries other than the coordinators collection place should determine time required for delivery. If work is not received by the deadline the participant will be notified that unless it is received by 7 days beyond the posted deadline the work will not be included in the exchange. If the work is received after the ONE-WEEK extension the work will be returned using the return postage included for the exchange. If no return postage was included in the print package, the prints will be held until the coordinator receives postage. The extension may be extended beyond ONE_WEEK, at the discretion of the coordinator if there is a national emergency making regular mail late. 2. Return Postage Return postage must accompany the print package when it is sent to the coordinator. If no return postage was included in the print package, THE EXCHANGE PRINT PACKAGE WILL BE HELD UNTIL POSTAGE IS RECEIVED BY THE COORDINATOR. 3. Method Used: The Baren Exchange is a program for forum members to create, exchange and display editions of woodblock prints. At this time only linocut prints have been allowed in addition to woodcut prints. IF PRINTS OTHER THAN WOODCUT OR LINOCUT ARE RECEIVED THE PRINT PACKAGE WILL BE RETURNED USING THE ENCLOSED RETURN POSTAGE. IF NO POSTAGE IS INCLUDED THE EXCHANGE PRINT PACKAGE WILL BE HELD BY THE COORDINATOR. UNTIL POSTAGE IS RECEIVED. 4. Paper size: Each exchange has a specific paper size requirement which allows for ease of packaging by the coordinator. . Participants should read and adhere exactly to the paper size. IF PRINTS RECEIVED VARY FROM THE EXCHANGE SIZE REQUIREMENTS THEY WILL BE RETURNED TO THE ARTIST USING THE ENCLOSED RETURN POSTAGE. IF NO POSTAGE IS INCLUDED THE EXCHANGE, PRINT PACKAGE WILL BE HELD BY THE COORDINATOR UNTIL POSTAGE IS RECEIVED. 5. Drop outs: Dropouts will be allowed only until 3 weeks before the exchange time deadline to give individuals on the wait list time to complete and send their prints. If needed, participants should withdraw at the earliest date possible. 6. Wait list: If withdrawal from the wait list becomes necessary that participant should notify the coordinator ASAP. PARTICIPANTS WHO WITHDRAW AFTER THE PERMITTED WITHDRAWAL PERIOD WILL HAVE THEIR NAME AUTOMATICALLY ELIMINATED FROM THE NEXT TWO EXCHANGES AND WAIT LISTS IF WITHDRAWAL IS LATE ONCE AGAIN AFTER BEING REINSTATED - - OR IF THE PARTICIPANT WITHTHDRAWS AFTER THE DEADLINE - -OR IF THE PARTICIPANT DOES NOT NOTIFY THE COORDINATOR OF THE PLAN TO WITHDRAW, THEIR NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM FURTHER EXCHANGES. 7. Communication: Participants must be active Baren members and must have participated in discussions prior to signing up on an exchange. It is essential that the coordinator be in communication with the exchange participants. The participant must respond to e-mails sent by the coordinator and should notify the coordinator of a change in e-mail address. They should also let the coordinator know ASAP that a message was received and/or if they are unable to respond to e-mail questions. PARTICIPANTS WHO DO NOT RESPOND TO E-MAIL REQUESTS WILL HAVE THEIR NAME AUTOMATICALLY ELIMINATED FROM THAT EXCHANGE ------------------------------ From: "John and Michelle Morrell" Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 22:05:14 -0800 Subject: [Baren 15866] Where is: Murilo A. Pereira Murilo, who is signed up with the Baren #11 exchange, had exchange mail come back from the address mpereira@newsite.com.br If anyone knows of Murilo's current address, or if Murilo, you are reading the Baren, would you please update me? Also, for those of you who have ordered portfolios in the Baren exchanges, please do not wait for your portfolios to arrive before sending your prints to the current coordinator. The portfolios will be sent to the coordinator to pack and distribute with the print mailings. This allows a good price on the portfolios by the saving in shipping costs. So, your portfolios will be waiting for you--don't wait for them!
