This year's animal is the horse. Yes please count me in. I thoroughly enjoy getting all these postcards...little surprises every day. The envelopes are as colourful (correct Australian spelling!) as the cards inside. I am not sure which day Chinese actually falls on in January next year, usually about the 14th, but it would be nice to aim for about the 1st January like they do in Japan. Yes please count me in. I have started mine already!!!! Jan Perth Western Australia ------------------------------ From: "Daniel L. Dew" Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 09:56:51 -0400 Subject: [Baren 15943] Re: horses Giddy Up! Yes, yes, yes! I'm on for the year of the horse! I've been waiting for this one! As there are three horses in my back pasture, it's one of my very favorite subjects. Wanda ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 08:08:14 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15946] Symposium I'm back from 3 intense days, attending discussions at Portland State University. My brain is so full of information and ideas, it is about to burst. I was rather surprised by the fact that we all sat in an auditorium & listened to dissertations about prints, about art in general, about museums, about collecting. I'm afraid I came away feeling more like a museum curator than a hands-on printmaker. On the really positive side: I had a chance to have a great conversation with Dean Clark from Graphic Chemical. (He's just as nice as he sounds in print) About what? Well, Baren of course! I also got to see John Center's Memorial print. Swell print, John! I met & talked to lots & lots of people - and I'm sure I will leave out someone so I will only mention a few. Walt Padgett, who lives in Grants Pass & does some really wonderful hanga-style work. I think he & Dave would really enjoy meeting each other. A new friend from California, Andrea, who I will try to convince to join Baren, and lots of others. I'm still going through the exhibits of prints all over the Portland area - I think the next one will be one at Clark College in Vancouver WA. Japanese woodblocks from an extensive collection. I got to see some premier Hasui prints at the Carolyn Staley booth and a Mailol etching that just melted me to the floor at the Davidson booth. It was only $10,000! I felt the vendors were kind of given a raw deal - there was never a sufficient time between lectures for attendees to come to the Smith Center ballroom & go through the booths. My friend Suzi & I actually skipped one lecture (on writing) to go & look at everything. Well, that's about all for now. I'm going to go to the studio & work on my own prints now. Congrats to everyone having shows, I wish I could be at every single one of them! The Baren has been officially accepted as a Council Member of the American Print Alliance, so everyone belonging to Baren is eligible to participate in the Print Alliance project, and we hope you will. Unfortunately, the same print will not work for both, but - you only have to send one piece to the Alliance project - it can be a monotype, watercolor, drawing, pastel - any work on paper. Of course, it would be nice if it were a print - but, the main thing is that it is 8 x 10 and vertical. The idea is to commemorate a life lost in the WTC tragedy, so it is a portrait in the broadest sense. See www.printalliance.org for details of the project. You might also consider doing one "state print" for the Alliance project and then continue with the Barener's project - Just an idea.. Sharri LaPierre Secretary, American Print Alliance PS Wanda, it was so good to see you at the Print Symposium - sorry I didn't get a chance to visit with you. Maybe a group of us - anyone near Portland, OR - can get together for lunch and/or gallery hopping some time now that Crossing Boundaries is over. I wish more people could have done the symposium, it was really wonderful. ------------------------------ From: "autumnleaves" Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 22:28:15 +0100 Subject: [Baren 15952] New member James Williamson-Bell (autumnleaves@supanet.com) Hi Fellow Artists, I live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. I specialise in wildlife & landscape. I have made mine, but unfortunately never sent them out. Explaining is too long. They all have stamps and they just need to be mailed. So why aren't I mailing them? Simply because I applied a long time ago american stamps as I was staying in NYC for the summer and was about to send them from there. When I got back to Italy I realized they were still in my case. I just think that if I mail the whole bulk to someone all they should do is open the pack and pour the contents in a mailbox I am feeling awful for sending the cards at the end of the year - better late than never though. (chinese proverb??) I will be waiting to hear from a volunteer to send them. I'm looking forward to participating in the New Year Exchange this coming year! Last year I offered to re-post cards within the U.S. to help persons in other countries in the exchange who would find this method more cost efficient. Sending so many cards such long distances is so expensive! (I did treasure the envelopes, the stamps,-- I enjoyed every little bit of the snake exchange!) Perhaps we can 'buddy up' with other Baren members if re-posting is useful. He is the inventor of solar plate, see at http://www.solarplate.com so I have learned sooooo much and I am very excited about the work I have done today. We had an extra day before he goes home tomorrow and spent it in the studio. What a luxury, having my own personal printmaking instructor! Dan also has work on this web site so if you are interested go look here http://www.slidesenders.com/DANWELDEN.htm His new book, Printmaking in the Sun now makes sense to me.....Yippee! As much as I hate wiping plates, I might have to do it again. This solar plate is unbelievable. As soon as I get home from a little trip we are taking tomorrow, I am going to do more work and get them on my site so you can see them. Amazing stuff. Look for my report on the symposium in Baren Suji. Best to all, Barbara PS we traded prints! Printmaking is so good! ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V17 #1587 *****************************
