I'd like to know what I should look for in purchasing one. What are the necessary features, etc. Hope to spend omly a little more than $300. A second question is about selling a very old etching press. It weighs a ton (or a lot) and is on a primitive 2x4 stand. I have to diminish my studio and the press must go. I have a potential buyer but do not know what the asking price should be. Please......can anyone help???? Hopefully.......ElizA ------------------------------ From: "Philip Smith" Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 14:23:08 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16166] Re: Camera & press Dear Elizabeth,..Have you looked at www.steves-digicams.com it has a lot of choices on cameras, digitalwize, and prices which you can beat. As far as the press goes. It's the bed size that will determine your price. What size is it? What are the >necessary features, etc. Hope to spend omly a little more than $300. That price is maybe a few buck too low. $400 would get you better unit. I purchased a Nikon two years ago and it is perfect to do the work I require. Shooting my work, family stuff, and reference material, I think the best advise I can give you without getting all technical and guru-ish is the go and check the feature of the Nikon 950... it is the older model and has dropped down in price... I paid $1500 plus another 600 for two extra lens...(wide and telephoto) and a USB Image Mate flash card reader that transfers images to your computer. The 950 comes with a serial connector which works but is slower than growing grass.... Now once you have check out the features of the Nikon 950 see if you can match them in other camera. The most important feature of the (and is was revolutionary at the time) is the swivel LCD viewer. It is so convenient as you can shoot stuff from over head or down at you knees. Imagine shooting flowers .... gone are the days of getting down on your belly to look threw the viewer. Need I say more? Yes, one very important factor. Regular AA batteries will last about 3 minutes... I exaggerate but you get the meaning. Purchase a set of Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries, 2 sets is better and you will always have charged batteries handy. These will last about 30 to 40 shots before needing to be charged. So much depends on the amount of time and use of the LCD viewer. It eats battery power. You can often get a deal where the battery charger is thrown in. Another important note.... make sure you insert the batteries ....neg to neg and positive to positive ... in the charger. I toasted a set of batteries one time when I put one in the wrong way. Now about the flash cards. Most cameras come with a 8 mg card. A good rule of thumb is that one shot taken at the second best resolution... (very fine is best but not needed) fine is perfect and gobbles up a little less than 1 mg of disk space. So you can see that an 8 mg card can hold 8 shots. You can lower the resolution and get many more picts. You should go a play with a demo model and talk to the retailer. I have a 32 mg flash card and it is perfect. Once you get going with your new toy there is another point worth mentioning. When you have dumped the images into your computer do not drag the icons off of the flash card and toss them into the trash. This does not remove them. Always trash your images using the cameras trash function. An one last tiny but important advise is the format your card in the camera after about 150 pictures. It keeps you card pristine. When you format it erases everything from the card. If you have any question don't hesitate to contact me. >A second question is about selling a very old etching press. Please......can anyone help???? What is its name or manufacture. I can't help you with this but I'm sure you will get good feedback. One suggestion .... post this on PrintAustralia. If you are not a member, send me the blah blah blah and I will post it. Another good outlet is eBAy. Huge number of people browser that place. Have fun.
