My warmest wishes to you for the job ahead, re establishing your studio. I feel a lot of bareners will be available to help you. You can count on me as one of them. I suffered a devastating fire about six years ago after my landlord / studio mate vacuumed up some oil soaked saw-dust and the vacuum cleaner bag spontaneously combusted -- lost 30 years of records and virtually all supplies, books, artwork on paper, etc. Had three large (4'x4') paintings restored by the head conservator of Kansas City's Nelson Gallery of art -- but they were not the same afterwards (although they do have a kinda nice and ancient looking patina of sootiness in the cracks and bubbles). I was absolutely crushed and depressed for months, and spent that time scrubbing stuff and playing tug of war with my congenitally tight fisted insurance adjuster. It was so horrible! While the studio was re-constructed, I came in one Sunday morning to find a large trash barrel in flames in the middle of the studio -- I was able to extinguish it, but that's when I decided it was time to find my own place. I don't think of that awful time much anymore, nor the objects which were lost forever, but your letter brought it back. I feel so sorry for you! You will be VERY busy for a time, and I bet you will find that out of your experience and know-how your new work place will be even better and more efficient and 'right' than the old. And in a few years it will be filled to overflowing with meaningful stuff. Keep your chin up and don't worry too much when you feel sad -- that is so natural, and you will feel better and better as time passes, I am certain. I am sending you my love and good wishes! It really lifts my spirit to know that you are there and understand what this tragedy means. By the way they discovered that it was arson. They are investigating it now. I am down right now, but not out. One does not need such a cleansing by fire. On the other hand, I certainly am glad that you are OK, although slightly mentally dented by the experience, no doubt. I will send you some of my old oil painting tubes. I used to paint a lot in oils but haven't done it for many years. Some of those tubes were given to me by a person who gave up oil painting. They are probably 30 or 40 years old and still good! I will send you a few brushes you can use. Also, I will look through my prints to see which Baren exchange prints I have more of that I can replace for you. Jean Eger Womack P.S. Was "Norman" your pre-married name? ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. I was soooo lucky as I kept all of my Baren Portfolios at home so we could admire them when friends dropped by. The only one that was caught in the fire was #1. I had taken it to the studio to show a customer. I kept the Norman name as I was the only child and my Dad was very proud of his name and wanted it carried on. I was also lucky as I had just taken my new kitten home to introduce her to my older Manx. That would have really been tragic.
