Baren Digest Sunday, 13 January 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1684 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bobbi Chukran Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 14:07:53 -0500 Subject: [Baren 16677] Question about pyrographic (?) woodcuts Hi guys, I have a question, and I hope I don't offend anyone on the list by asking.... I recently saw some artwork by Tony McGregor--he does woodburning (pyrography), and then takes prints from those. I've often thought about doing this, since wood carving gets to my wrists so fast, and Dremels are too loud, but wasn't sure that the lines would be deep enough to take a print from. Has anyone on the list tried this? And if so, did it work very well? Here's his website in case anybody else wants to see his work: http:///www.tonymcgregorart.com I have a stack of cedar slices that have the most beautiful grain; I'd like to experiment on them.... Thanks for any advice, comments, etc. Bobbi C. ------------------------------ From: "April Vollmer" Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 19:13:22 -0500 Subject: [Baren 16678] Sarah to the rescue! Well, I bit the bullet and re-covered two barens today, my hon baren and Sarah's Murasaki baren. Sarah Hauser KINDLY ran over to hold it down while I operated. They look equally bad, so I suppose it means at least I am getting consistent! I forgot to run the takenokawa across the edge of my table to soften, but we did run a scissors across the inside to soften it. We left them in damp towels for half an hour or so first. Sarah held it down while I folded it, cutting and folding and twisting, then tying it's tails tightly with a string knotted on both ends: poor little thing! The handle ends look okay, but the middles are pretty loose. I guess they will stay on anyway! I have been using my ball bearing baren, but am ready to print a big one. The advantage of the ball bearing is that it doesn't chew up the paper, but slides smoothly across. The veins in the takenokawa shred delicate paper, so you have to use a sheet of protective paper. Still, the true baren prints MUCH better. The whiter takenokawa I got from Bill P. seems better quality than the one Sarah got from McClain's, which was a little thick. Has anyone tried the ones from Baren Mall? BTW, I will be teaching a few classes: The Brookfield Craft Center, CT, July 6 and 7, and I'll go out to Kala Art Institute this summer August 10 and 11. I put the info on my website: http://www.aprilvollmer.com/classes.html It would be great to see anyone from Baren! Printing and cutting in NYC.
