Baren Digest Friday, 1 February 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1703 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Chelsea391@aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 13:17:58 EST Subject: [Baren 16816] Introducing myself Hello everyone. I'm delurking to say how extremely interesting and useful this forum has been. I love how you model the way an international community can come together on line. Also, the web site is easy to traverse and loaded with information. I'm happy to be part of this, even though usually a silent member. I intend to sign up for the next exchange. I've based most (but not all) of my drawings and prints on musical imagery for almost 30 years, starting from my stint at S.W. Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. While there I did some life drawing at a Paris university, and the models were dancers dancing. My life is full of music anyway, and I found that translating dance gestures into hand movements that drive the mark-making tool suited me well. This worked really well in drawing and painting, and I found ways to make it work in etching and copper engraving. Wood-block printing is very different, and I'm still searching for the way to make it mine. But I love it, and like the surprisiing results. At least, each print has surprised me! I started just about a year ago, and have taken three courses in New York to move me along, one of them with April Vollmer. I just turned 63 and love to have started to learn something new, challenging, surprising, and satisfying. See y'all in the Exchange. Thanks Graham for posting the info about the 4th Kiwa Exhibition in Kyoto. Some of us that were around for the very first Baren exchange in 1999 had our prints included by Richard Steiner in the 1999 KIWA show. This turned out to be Baren's "coming out" party and the very first official exhibition in which our forum group took place and got recognition. I have another week to go before I have to put the newletter to press (as they say!)...last chance to get published in the net's best newsletter for woodblock...don't hold back now, anything goes! (well..almost anything!) thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)...under 10" of fresh fallen snow... ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 11:25:35 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16818] quote! And the book is available through Amazon.com for a measly $1300, give or take a buck. Sigh. Incidentally, through my searches, I re-read most of the books in the library of Barenforum.org and golly gee wiz that's good reading! For all newcomers and everyone else, go back there once in a while and appreciate what Master-Bull and his chillun have done for us humble woodcutters.
