I know of people who charge a pretty penny for an oil or pastel portrait and I thought: Well, I could do that AND give them 20 copies to boot! What think ya'll? Daniel L. This is the voice of experience speaking. Commissions are good and the hardest work you will ever do. Tough to get prints into all media shows and good to know that woodcuts have a place right in with the paintings and sculptures. Re: getting shown, just get out there and play the game! All it takes are very decent slides and perseverance. Be more stubborn than the system, there are many works on paper/ print shows out there and eventually you sneak into one or two. One thing that helps is getting the catalogs for past shows (even if rejected) so that you see if the "feel" of the show is right for the work you do. I've been sending slides to the LSU show for 3 years, finally got in. You just brush off the rejection letters, another juror, another opinion, another gate of opportunity! I also like to keep track of my "batting average" to see if the submission/rejection ratio has improved over the years. I shoot for the better competitions, might as well dream big. Makes the whole thing kind of fun. Costly fun, sometimes less than hilarious fun, perhaps a bit stressful fun, but always fun. Once you get into the rhythm of entering once a month (or whatever), it takes less time and effort to put a packet together. The instructions on how to label slides are always interesting and varied. I know an artist that had a rejection form letter for rejections that went something like this (unknown whether he actually sent the letter, but it helped him to cope): Dear juror/committee, Due to time and/or space constrictions in our mail box as well as an excessive amount of other important mail, I regret to inform you that your rejection letter was declined. Rather than focus on this experience, we encourage you to send rejections to other artists and continue to seek opportunities for your rejection to be accepted. We have found that well-written, personal rejections and return of undamaged slides will help in getting your rejections accepted in the future. Best of luck in all your endeavors, Artist X Funny, huh? Keep on moving, ain't nothing else to do...except do nothing. Entering shows is very costly and time consuming and if you have good slides eventually you will get in some. The question I ask is why? What are we trying to do here? Build a resume? Flood the world with our work? I don't know the answer but I think we should ask this question. Seems you have to play the game and I am as guilty as everyone else, I keep sending in slides and getting rejection letters, with an occasional acceptance. The baren has been good for my ego, it is great to get feedback, both good and bad. I truly only want the good though. I don't think I am changing things at this date, from bad feedback, but you never know. Some of my particular reasons are: - - Standing still hurts my feet more than walking - - I want every line of my resume (i.e. achievement) to cost me immeasurable suffering (it's a Catholic thing [:-)] - - I like dreaming big and sailing far, even if I never get anywhere the sailing is what drives me - - I don't want to live in a cave amassing prints by myself telling myself the world doesn't appreciate me - - It's good for my character to measure myself against my peers - - Getting rejected keeps me humble and hungry for more - - Getting accepted makes me "humbled" and hungry for more - - At some point my mom's compliments just weren't enough feedback - - Since I lack an academic degree, this is one venue available to the artist to get my work "out there" in front of other people that know art and rubbing elbows with other artists; makes me feel more like an artist - - What else would I do between 7:00-8:00 AM on Mondays? There are more answers, I'm sure. Every submission is a small scary adventure, like sending a child to perform in a school play; when they succeed they make me proud.
