My opening at Ceres isn't until Thursday, July 18 from 6 to 8 at 584-88 Broadway, between Prince and Houston. And thank you all for your nice response to my interview at World Printmakers. I don't exactly work in a vacuum here in NYC, but it is good to know I am talking to folks who are interested! best, April www.aprilvollmer.com ------------------------------ From: Marco Flavio Marinucci Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 06:36:58 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18398] Booths? Hello there, I have to set up a booth 10 feet by 8 feet and the company where I will be displaying provides a pipe and drape setting not suitable for hanging my woodblocks. Any advice on where to buy good booth supplies like a portable wall or any advice on booths? Marco - I'm not sure where you are located, but most decorators that set trade shows provide rental booths and equipment on site. While they aren't inexpensive, we have found it to be a useful service sometimes. We own our own backdrop because of the number of shows that we do, but it is generally cheaper to rent if you are only doing an occasional show. Lot of the equipment/setup seems to be home made or purchased thru local hardware & home supplies stores. http://barenforum.org/newsletter/issue08/issue08.html Good luck.....Julio ps. Marco, There is no really inexpensive way to do this. I have special wooden backdrops made of pegboard with supports around the outdside that the NWPC uses, but they are hard to move without a van. I see other people using wire uprights, with about 2"square holes in them. These are available at store display companies. Here in Portland there is a second hand place for this kind of stuff, but they do not have everything as it depends on what they are able to buy to resell. These wire uprights seem to be the best as I see so many people with them and they break down flat. The thing to do is to be able to store it and use it again, this makes your investment over time worthwhile. They are about $40 a section. I have always thought that with creativity one could build something with PVC pipe, but in the long run it might be just as expensive and just as hard to store as wire uprights. Let us know how you solve this problem, I think everyone will be interested in what a creative person can come up with. Also ask everyone you know, someone may have something you can borrow for a one time show. Any advice on where to buy good booth supplies like a portable > wall or any advice on booths? > Grazie, > Marco Hi Marco, Dean is right on the money on his advice. For a one time thing, rent display walls from the company that is in charge of such things. The promoter of the show should guide you in the right direction. You should also be able to rent a table if you need one, chairs and lights in some cases. One look at these web sites and you will see that you will save money: http://www.armstrongproducts.com (my favorite, I just dropped $2700 on brand new walls) http://www.propanels.com You will also need a floor cover and lighting, since usually the overhead lights are dimmed. A cheap solution to both of those is your local builder supplier like Home Depot or Lowe's. For my first few shows I bought carpet runners in the right width, they are about 3 feet wide and rubber backed. I got 3 to cover a 10 x 10 laid side by side. Lights can be those reflector clip ons, which don't look the absolute best but do a great job of lighting. Don't forget extension cords. An alternate source of lighting: http://www.usalight.com where you can purchase plug in track lights if you are so inclined. You can look at some display possibilities here: http://www.elainemartin.com http://www.aimfix.com Lastly, if you have some time, you might look at the classified ads in these sources for rental or purchase of used equipment: http://www.showwestmag.com http://www.craftmasternews.com http://www.sunshineartist.com I think that's about it! She asked us to put the pieces of mag/newspaper in a tray with pure water and a spoon of sodium bicarbonate for an hour. Then we picked them out and soaked then in filter paper. I don't know how effective this method could be, buy I'm planning to do some prints with collage (images from magazines). I guess I will use rice paste of methil to stick them, but Im afraid that the acidity of the magazine cuts could pass the acidity into de printing paper. Any solution to this? Juan Guerrero J. I have used this product from I used WEI T'OĻ DEACIDIFICATION SOLUTION on non-archival paper that I used for chine colle'. It is an aerosol spray that comes in several 'numbers'/strengths? I was using maps in chine colle' and sprayed them with this to neutralize the map paper, which was a low quality, acidy paper just a cut above newsprint. Artists by nature tend to think and live outside the box. Human beings always want to sanitize life, no matter where in the world you go! Behavior and beliefs outside the social norm are labeled as abnormal mental health symptoms. I've always suspected that societies are abnormal mental health symptoms! Look at the trend to drug our kids with Ritalin. There are of course children whose severe Attention Deficit can disrupt/ruin their entire lives, but I've known kids that were simply "different" who were labeled and drugged into ordinariness. Could you imagine if Degas or Van Gogh had Prozac or Ritalin? Or most of the world "masters" for that matter. I don't want to imagine a world of mundane art! For those of you who haven't read it yet, I recommend the book "Rembrandt's Monkey." ------------------------------ From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 17:28:33 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18407] Alliance Portfolio This is strange, isn't it? That of all the printmakers in the world we only got 300+ prints for this Alliance exhibition...do you think it is just too hard to do this, that we are too close to the problem? That the feelings are too strong? I add my plea to Sharri's, if you still would like to participate in this, send a print to the Alliance. The Baren did send 29 prints, so 10% or so of the total. Best to all and hope you are enjoying the summer! Barbara The following message was composed by Brian Jones, President of the Mid-America Print Council. Since I can think of no better words - I am forwarding his complete message to you as encouragement to participate in the American Print Alliance Memorial Portfolio, if you have not already done so. Please?? Sharri LaPierre, Northwest Print Council Here's his message: As you may know, the deadline for the Memorial Portfolio has been extended. In part to wait out those artists, myself included, who tend to put things off till the last minute only to realize that the last minute has gone by. Well, it had, and now it hasn't. Also, the extension is because the American Print Alliance realized that some artists simply needed time and distance. If you're ready to respond to the call, it is not too late. Some of you have mentioned that is was difficult dealing with the 11th in a work of art. Many artists, in fact, have had a hard time responding to that particular day, that's why the Alliance defined the idea to be as general as possible, to allow our responses to be whatever we needed them to be. Of course, one response would be to do nothing in this situation, and some may choose that response. It's o.k.. I'm going to take advantage of the deadline and get my print completed, and included. It's simply that the importance of the project has grown in significance since September. Many of the works received so far do commemorate particular individuals, some are generally about good things that families do in life, many of them express grief, and a few are about the destruction (though that wasn't encouraged). There are abstract images, landscapes, there are images of all sorts. Anything in the print, drawing, paper media that is your honest response is appropriate, that is except images that don't fit the scale requirements (10x8 vertical sheet), or ones that include a copyrighted news media picture. There are, to date, a little over 300 responses. That's a considerably lower number than the thousands originally anticipated. We can still get this portfolio up to an overwhelmingly engaging number. Imagine seeing an installation of thousands of prints, where the collective group is as awesome as each created image. Imagine your response to that; imagine the audience response. If you can be a part of this project now, it would be great. Additional information can be found at the APA web site, . If you decide to not participate, I hope that whatever form your response has been has been a healing one.
