Baren Digest Friday, 5 July 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1887 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Thu, 04 Jul 2002 09:46:25 -0400 Subject: [Baren 18638] Horacio's Print Just a quick plea. I already posted on PA, but will post here, too, as many of the same people who were in Endangered Species, were also in the Sacred Trees exchange. My Sacred Trees package by accident did not include Horacio's print and I didn't discover it until I tried to put the placecard with the print (I had gotten the colophon from the website because I didn't receive one with my original package) and Horacio's name was there on the website. I had assumed all along that his print was in my package of prints, and it wasn't. Does anyone who was in the Sacred Trees exchange have their copy of Horacio's print and would be willing to loan it to me for use in the show for two months. Even though I wouldn't have it in time for tomorrow night's Opening, there's a place I can put it and there would still be a couple months left of viewing of his print. Unfortunately, we weren't able to use his wonderful, poignant Endangered Species print because there is a ruling by the Trustees of the park about not having images of nudes in shows as families with young children come through and this is a conservative area, unfortunately. The coordinator of the show loves his print, as do I, but she has to follow the rules, herself. In a recent show she had hung a lovely piece with a nude and was asked to remove it. You might ask, well what about Julio's tree and Maria's. They got in (Maria's were androgynous, and Julio's looked like a tree to me until after we got it hung and Jim said, look at all those people!, and that's when I discovered all the folks in the tree, and a noticeably nude silhouette of a woman), but then the Trustees will be at the opening, so who knows [:-)] . You can contact me offlist if you have a copy of Horacio's print to loan. The first week of Bootcamp was one of consolidation from last year. Graham is an excellent hanga teacher with patience and tact! Kent and I went all "prepared" with woodblocks cut! I was ever so lucky to have the same unique set of guys with me again - Kent, Richard S, Richard B and John Root (the talented baren maker, John Root, to boot!) with Frank Trueba able to join us that week. Doing a live-in workshop gives you consistancy day after day for a good focus on printing......We missed you Marco and Bill. But we also had fun and lots of that, too. Second week of Bootcamp....Richard Brown came back to complete his interrupted week, with Claude Aimee, Charles, Jean, Brenda, Jen, Carole and Marilynn. Graham had his hands full with nine in the class, six of whom hadn't done hanga before. We were a handful...with the addition of three husbands, one mother and a baby crow to feed as well. The results speak for themselves...on Graham's Website at < http://woodblock.info > and follow the Workshop prompts! Don't miss the good stuff! I have yet to catch up on the Baren Digest but will be able to do that in the next few days. I am still on Cloud 9....Travel between Perth (Western Australia) and Vancouver and return also gave me the opportunity to see eleven full length movies! I'll catch up with you all soon. Then place between two towels and roll with a rolling pin. It relaxes the fibers of the paper so that the ink can penetrate between the fibers. For Asian papers, one can interleave with newsprint which has been sprayed with water. It also relaxes the paper fibers, which became intertwined and interlocked in the papermaking process. Soaking wet is no good for those thin mulberrry papers! One can also paint water on, drybrush style, if one is making a stack for an edition. Put the stack in a plastic bag and allow the dampness to spread evenly throughout the stack. Put it in the refrigerator or freezer if you cant get around to printing it! Even in the refrigerator you can get foxing. Guess how I know this! I lost half an edition of Endangered Species by leaving it in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks. Oh my goodness, there were the little black mold spots! Learning things the hard way is not much fun, is it? The exchange was formed to give those not in the main 14 exchange a chanch to join an exchange. With that in mind and having two who wrote to me before the deadline i set wanting in and not being in the main 14 exchange, in all fairness I said they WOULD get in if they told me before today. I know I said i would wait list the one request, but she is not in the main exchange and to be fair and consistent, I have to change that and add her to the exchange and wait list 2 who were the latest to sign and are in the main exchange. Hope there are no hard feelings and knowing from past exchanges wait listers will probably get in. I set the rules and the dates and feel i should stand by them. From now on anyone else wanting in 14a regardless of whether they are in or out of the main 14 exchange will be placed on the wait list. Thanks to everyone, it will be fun getting those prints and remember we have a colophon page sign up right under the main 14 exchange, 21 prints due here. the list is: 1 Marilynn Smith - coordinator 2. Mike Lyon 3. Frank Trueba 4. Gilda Zimmerling 5. Barbara Mason 6. John Center 7. Kat Pukas 8. Sharen Linder 9. Gillyn Gato 10.Monica Bright 11.Charles Morgan 12.Eli Griggs 13.Julio Rodriquez 14.Minna Sora 15.Daniel L. Dew 16.Barbara Patera 17.Linda Hornberger 18.Horacio Soares Neto 19.Sylvia Taylor 20.Bea Gold Wait list: 1. George Jarvis 2. Jean Womack George and Jean I feel bad and espcially for you George as you signed up June 29, but more than likely you will be exchanging with the group. I just had to feel I set the rules and to be fair had to follow them. Julio: Thanks for the website with the write-up on Karen Kunc. It told me more than I thought I wanted to know. I'm even more impressed with her work than I thought possible. The color woodcut that was included at the end of the writeup is fabulous. It does look like a beautiful print. But what's amazing is the size of the edition--150 copies from a reduction block using 36 colors in a print of 20 x 28 inches. As a reduction print, this means that quite a few more had to be printed in order to test out color combinations. Another site with a large selection of her prints: http://www.artline.com/galleries/haslem/kunc/reviews.html At 07:47 PM 04/07/2002 -0700, you wrote: >Julio: > >Thanks for the website with the write-up on Karen Kunc.
