There is a store in the next town that sells small flat wooden pieces in every shape you can imagine, so maybe I could start there. I think I'd like to keep it with something suggestive of the traditions in printmaking of the times since this is to be a "pioneer" experience. Any idea how we could get some hands-on experience with this. " There are ways to introduce relief printmaking without knives, one way is to use the bottom of Styrofoam trays. With a pencil the kids can draw directly INTO the Styrofoam. Then have them roll the plate with acrylic paint (inexpensive 2-4" foam paint rollers work very well for this and can be purchased at any hardware store), lay bond paper on top, gently rub the back with baren (or spoon, or drawer pull, etc) pull the paper away and WHALA you have a white line print, very similar to whiteline woodcuts. You can also have student glue found flat objects (leaves, lace, string etc) to illustration or poster board. They can then roll paint over it and, well you know the rest... For kids 11 and up I use a material that is very much like a giant white eraser. I have several sets of inexpensive (ok cheap) Japanese student knives. I wouldn't use them for wood but they work very well with the softer rubber material. The students can draw onto it or transfer a simple image with carbon paper. They then can cut a white line or cut away the negative space. Roll acrylic paint...etc...etc...etc... ------------------------------ From: "PHARE-CAMP,PATTI (HP-USA,ex1)" Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 11:14:09 -0400 Subject: [Baren 18750] RE: Baren Digest V20 #1898 "Maybe you could get lots of popscicle sticks or similar small straight pieces and just glue them down..." I don't know where you live, but a local craft store and Michael's craft store sell variety bags of small flat wooden shapes. These can be glued onto poster or illustration board and then rolled with paint etc... ------------------------------ From: "marilynn smih" Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 09:22:18 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18751] Re: Baren Digest V20 #1898 If you glue things on a backing and print them this is not a woodcut it is a collagraph. Just have to tell the kids the difference. I would have some cut blocks to show them, to educate them, and have them ink those if they want and than build the collagraphs if that is what you would like. I merely find it important that as educators one should explain the differences as so few truly understand what a print is, least of all the different techniques, it is an opportunity to educate. Nuff said on that... I would also like to say to all forum members that I am finding Baren Forum to be most enlightening and entertaining, and a must read before retiring for the day. Like most of you I have a pretty full life, (work, work and mostly more work) and must make choices about how I spend my leisure moments. I have been consistently amused, grateful for technical information, and charmed by contributions from all of you good folk. I love the critter stories, esp as they are all true. Bears and crows , in some fashion or other, have figured consistently in my life experiences also. I was printing my LPE (Large Print Exchange) edition and wanting the large sheets (18X26" Rives) to dry quickly I put the finished prints outside to dry on the sunny grass. Before long I had ants crawling all over the prints. Lots! Not sure what attracted the ants... it could have been the starch/flour paste I use for hanga or it could have been the tea "bath" I gave the prints to give them an aged look.... Or maybe they were just admiring my work! thanks...Julio ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 11:52:06 -0500 Subject: [Baren 18754] Re: Baren 1897 Ah-HA !! They are very responsible after you've instilled the fear of God in them. I never had anyone need even a bandaid. They were also very careful to remind each other to cut away from themselves and keep their other hand out of the way. If the children you are dealing with are of this age I wouldn't hesitate to let them carve a small piece of very soft wood.
