I think I recall that you are using either dry or >prepared pigments... Can you let me know your procedure? ie, sources and >materials, grinding (you use mortar & pestle?), medium, proportions, >shelf-life, etc? What do you store them in? In a class situation I often use Akua Color monoprint ink, since it has lots of pigment and is ready to go. However, for my own work, I find it has more glycerin than I need and can be too thick. I buy pigment DISPERSIONS (pigment already ground in water) and mix it with a little gum Arabic (already in solution). I have read recipes for making true watercolor that require many other additions, and a different amount of binder for each pigment because of their different characters. (heavy earth tones need more for example) I have also read recipes for making really good gum arabic by grinding the crystals. HOWEVER, life being short, I have opted for simplicity, and it seems to work. Moku hanga seems to be quite tolerant of my crude mixture of pigment and gum arabic, I suspect because the pigments are forced deeply into the paper. The thin layer of animal size on the washi may help, too. I get the pigment dispersions from Art Guerra here in NY. I only mix as much as I need at a time, since it will settle or dry out. I store it in clear 3 oz plastic screw top jars. Oh, I forgot, EXCEPT BLACK. The thick sumi ink from Baren Mall is SUPERB. As thick as peanut butter, so you can print as dark as you want.
