It's good to see he's using the most honestly basic handtools for these. This doesn't relate to printmaking directly, but to looking at computer screens and getting almost nauseated when looking at them too long. Does anyone know if the newer flat screens (the ones that are not deep) help? I was writing an article for Baren Suji for Julio and found that staring at the screen for my editing process which is often long and slow, was making me feel sick. Florescent lighting flickers at 60 hertz (60 times per second) and some people get irritable or feel head-achey from that -- a good 'minimum' refresh rate (flicker) for computer monitors is above 70 hertz -- many monitors, especially inexpensive ones, refresh at 50 hertz (some even slower!) when the resolution is set to 600x800 or above which is slow enough to cause many people problems... One thing you can try which costs 'nothing' is to turn the brightness and contrast down a bit. Then you'll only suffer eye-strain. Or set the resolution down to 640x480 or whatever resolution you can so that the refresh is above 70hz -- that may help. For what it's worth, my monitor has settings of 50, 60, 70, 72, 75, 80, and 85 hertz. At the 1024x768 resolution I use, it refreshes set at 75 hertz and it's not too bad... The higher the refresh rate the better, I think. That's one fourth of the time, if you do that it should help. Look at more distant objects when taking a break from the computer. Darrell ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 13:00:06 EDT Subject: [Baren 18868] solarplate question and editioning question Hi all, I have a couple of questions, one of them having to do with solarplates and one having to do with editioning (please excuse the cross-post for those of you that are on more than one list): 1. I stored some of my solarplates in individual plastic bags without first wrapping in paper. I recently realized this was a big mistake, as some of the plastic bags got wrinkled and the plate partially stuck to the plastic bag. When I removed the plate from the bag, there was still some plastic residue that seems nearly impossible to get off the plate, and I'm afraid to scrub the plate too hard. I wiped the plates with vegetable oil and ran them through the press a few times. Some of the plates print fine even though the plate appears to have residue, while when printing some of the other plates, the imprint of the residue shows on the print. Have you ever had this problem, and do you know how to clean these plates? Would cleaning w/a solvent be more effective? The Lower East Side printshop, where I work, has denatured alcohol but I wasn't sure if this would be good to use or not. 2. The second question is about editioning. if I end up having to make these plates all over again, how would I mark my edition. For example, if I've been marking an edition as an edition of 40 but only printed 15, then have to make the plate again, can this be considered part of the same edition or is there some special way to mark these? I really appreciate any help you can give me on these! thanks a lot Sarah ------------------------------ From: "marilynn smih" Date: Tue, 06 Aug 2002 10:21:32 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18869] Re: Baren Digest V20 #1918 My junk mail filter called my newsletters from baren junk!!!! imagine! my mailing address for all 14a stuff is: Marilynn Smith PO Box 71 Nahcotta, Wa. 98637 If you do not hear about my receiving your mail for a few weeks it is because I am not there but back in the city cleaning and decorating this big house so we can sell it. Stuck here for 2 open house sundays, unless you come rescue me and buy this house!!!! I have found print making very rewarding because it is the one medium I have successfully used my drawings and watercolors to create new pieces. I now also find i can create new watercolors from old ones as well. But my oil paintings were never from drawings, I could not seem to do that. My sketches usually chage as I carve and that is what makes the work new and exciting!
