These scams inspired a fun running joke on "after 5," but when I start getting these at work I become worried. I've been getting one or two of these each week since we started this Yahoo mail group for Exchange 14. Have any of you noticed an increase in these? I'm concerned because this is my work email and the only mail groups I belong to are Baren, after 5 (digests) and this one. I assumed that since these are private mail groups and the addresses aren't publicly posted that it would be safe to use my work email (I check it daily as opposed to once or twice a month at home). I don't know where these people are getting my email address from and I don't want this type of thing coming to me at work. I've checked with my co-workers and none of them are getting these at work. This could become a security issue with my employer if I start getting slammed with these (especially since this one included attachments). If these spam scams are pulling Dear Sir/Madam, I am a Private Investigator based in Europe. A group of Government Officials from an African Country contacted me with a Proposal. I am to Make contact with you and state their offer, if your Interest is Genuine, you will be contacted for your Account details to which will be transferred the sum of $33,600,000.00 USD. I hate to erase all my cookies, they are so convenient in our company intranet and when going to pages I do regular business with...But this may be the danger of cookies; an overweight mail queue with viral attachments! Patti P-C ------------------------------ From: Jack Reisland Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 09:56:38 -1000 Subject: [Baren 18898] Re: email scams Hi Patti, spammers use programs that scan through ALL sites posting on the internet. They detect and clip out e-mail addresses. Since the Baren forum is archived on line, all our e-mail addresses are accessible to these programs. Most unfortunate, but this is one of the prices of our freedom to communicate so freely. I suggest that you support legislation to limit spamming, and set up a spam filter. As annoying as these spamming scum bags are though, can you imagine how hard it would be to have a group like Baren without the internet? Jack R. I found some off as much as a couple of inches, smaller. I should think that something close in size is reasonable, mine (for 14a) is cut a bit small because the plate centers so nicely on the size i am using, I should think as long as it is not over sized for the box and close to oban it should work fine. Am I wrong???" Hi Marilynn...the 911-Firemans prints were not part of a formal exchange. It was a project conceived by John Center to raise money for the cause. There were no plans to redistribute the prints back to the artists. There also was no case ( a la Baren exchanges) ordered for these prints as we were not expecting them back. John created a beautiful cover to put the prints inside and he opted for giving each artist a set of prints back to sell, exhibit, auction, etc...(I think John paid himself for all the $$$ shipping back !!!) the idea was/is that you would either sell your set, exhibit them for sale or make a respectable contribution to the fund. But not just keep them as you would an exchange. I chose to keep my set of prints and make a donation to the 911 fund, thus allowing me the chance to display the prints in the near future. Others are trying to setup exhibits with the point of selling the prints or obtaining additional prints from the contributing artists. It is an ongoing project with still some great opportunities for us all to raise funds! Re the limits on size...the main Baren exchange page defines oban size as "o-ban size - a range of 10 x 15 inches (25.4 x 38 centimeters) to 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 ". That gives you a bit of play for the paper size. The actual image can be any size. I seen 4X6 images (engravings) on a 10X15 sheet and I seen full 10.5X15.5 bleed prints w/o borders. I enjoy and learn from them all. The close limits on paper size are as Darryl mentioned for the sake of uniform & ease of display during exhibits and also for fit into the folio boxes. Having said that...I don't think the coordinators have ever turned a set of prints away because of small paper size. There is an obvious expense in participating in an exchange, besides shipping costs...paper plays a major expenditure. If someone was always entering prints which were 1/2 the size required, you could see how others may feel. But I agree with you that an inch here or there should not be a big deal or grounds for disqualifying the print (as long as they fit in the case!). Oban & other standard japanese paper sizes vary a great deal depending on paper manufacturer...I think Mike Lyon posted about sizes a little while back. Just some thoughts, thanks...Julio ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 18:40:11 -0500 Subject: [Baren 18901] Re: List of Baren Exhibits... 08/13/2002 06:43:06 PM Here is what we have so far....did I miss anyone... or anything in 2002 ? Re: other stuff Hi there: Though expensive, Woodcraft is a great resource for Swiss Made tools, Flexcut, etc. They do offer good cuts of Cherry, Maple, basswood & other woods in plank cuts, but, IF YOU CAN, find a fellow with a small saw mill and lay in a store of plank stuff, cut to your specs. It. be a good investment in your printmaking future. Cheer, Eli carolwagner wrote on 11.8.02 5:14 am: Patti Phare-Camp and self went hunting local sources of wood last Friday and found a WOODCRAFT store here in Sacramento. Has anyone else in the group encountered this chain store? They had a limited amount of wood suitable for Moku Hanga...maybe suitable. I purchased a piece of cherry, (prunis sertina) which is 1/4x3x24. I'm sure that it is nowhere near the quality that Dave gets in Japan, but figure I can cut it into three pieces and plan on doing some small 'sumizuri' prints using that beautiful sumi ink I ordered from Baren. I also picked up a larger piece of Finnish Birch plywood to experiment with. Also duly noted was how nicely a sample of American bass (tilla americana) cut across the grain. Best regards to all, I really think you some of the best folk I've encountered in a long time, Carol G-W Papalotl Design Group Sacramento, california ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V20 #1926 *****************************
