Baren Digest Monday, 26 August 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1938 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 09:47:39 +0000 Subject: [Baren 18979] Re: Baren Digest V20 #1937 Murilo asked what a two color block print is. Two color blocks could mean two blocks or it could mean two colors on a block, the colors being separated by wide areas so that inking each would not disturb the other. That's my take on it. Congratulations to both Sarah and April. You guys are really cooking! Wow!!!! Thanks for color tips, everyone. I have my own that I use, but mostly I like compliments to make greyed tones. It's nice to hear what others are doing. So I'm to understand not every red and every green will make black. I'd like to try John Center's transparent viridian over umber. That's one I hadn't imagined. Louise asked "who and what is 'Lewis and Clark'"? It's the title for my solarplate etching which was selected for the Washington Printmakers exhibition and it's up on their website as well. If you're asking how that title came to be, I have to credit Jeffrey for suggesting it when I showed him the print, which is a back view of two pomeranian dogs who do look like they're setting off on an expedition. here's the link.. http://www.washingtonprintmakers.com/small_works/small_works-hauser.html WPG Juried Exhibition: National Small Works 2002, Artist Sarah Hauser thanks all for your support! best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ From: "marilynn smih" Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 07:52:15 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18981] Re: Baren Digest V20 #1937 Congragulations to April. How wonderful to have such gifted people to converse with. As for blacks, the watercolorist who is a purist does not have a black in their pallette, we always mix black. This is because there are many shades of blacks and warms and cools to consider when working with color. If you want water based dense black certainly sumi is a wonderful choice. Having studied calligrahy for several years as well as painting, which should if you have decent teachers come with a lot of color knowledge I have the sumi that you make yourself with the block and it is very wonderful black. Guess I will have to experiment now with hanga and my new pigments, there is a lot to know about color. We cut a block for each color, but it is really one block anyway, since we cut two SIDES of the block. You can put two colors on the same side, but only if the colors are far apart. Or, of course, you can overprint two colors on the same area. I often print one color then the same block with a bokashi area of a second color. The response has been good with lots of people interested. A couple of artists were contacted for info on prints but as far as I know, no sales have been made. Not surprising since so little is for sale out of the show. We did sell a couple of woodblock prints, but they were NWPC members and not baren members. Still an appreciation of woodblock is good, no matter who sells work! I cannot believe everyone is not on the internet, but some artists are not. Several people had a hard time believing the prints were all mine, so maybe I am just not appreciating them enough. It is true that we seem to take our own and each others work for granted. Seeing it all on the wall is pretty cool. I left a camera there but still am not sure if we have any photos. I was too busy talking and forgot about taking pictures. I will attempt to get some this week before it is too late! So if you ever have an opportunity to show baren work and want baren brochures, let me know as we have a bunch now!
