Baren Digest Sunday, 8 September 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1951 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: GraphChem#aol.com Date: Sat, 7 Sep 2002 10:40:20 EDT Subject: [Baren 19095] Fireman Prints Dear Bareners.... I have to say that I'm blown away! John Center dropped a set of prints off yesterday - unfortunately I was out of the office and missed John. I've seen images of these prints online, but not surprisingly, nothing compares with the real thing. You have all outdone yourselves. John, I'm sorry I missed you. I really appreciate your making the trip out here. Unfortunately I was in the city at a meeting - making the world safe for manufacturers from Illinois, and hearing Birkett and Durkin speak. For those of you outside of Illinois we have a Senate race here that pits the incumbent Durbin against the challenger Durkin. No name confusion here, right? My husband gets very impatient with me when I inquire of a small gallery owner which this is a hand pulled print or a copy of an original. Often they are not sure and are embaressed when I inquire. The way to the answer usually is, " it there an original or is this an original." I than try to give them an explanation of the difference. He says I am embaressing these people and I say I am educating them. I always say it is fine to sell either but that they and the public should be informed. It is simply wrong to sell something that is a copy and have people think they are getting something that is of collectors status. Unfortunately there are a lot of small galleries out there who have folks running them who are not educated about prints, so i feel part of my job is to tell them. I had a fine arts degree, yes a university degree, and before I took printmaking (after I had graduated) I did not, myself, fully understand the diference. Therefore, I am not certain an art appreciation class would always be a place to learn all a consumer and collector needs to know. We as printmakers need to take the responsibility of educating.
