Baren Digest Saturday, 5 October 2002 Volume 21 : Number 1984 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 09:22:02 +0000 Subject: [Baren 19428] Kitakata, Stones and Cake Jeanne, you asked about kitakata paper for hanga. I think you would need to size it as it has little or no sizing in it. I tried printing hanga with it without the sizing and it was strange, the results I mean. Has anyone here tried it? I haven't tried sizing it. I love it for oil-based ink, though. *** Josephine, it must have been pretty neat "nattering" and looking at prints with David Stones. Thanks for including a link to his website. It's always nice to check in and see what's new on a printmaker's web pages. It made me want to take out the hanga supplies and play with them and look at the exchange folios (Oh, and eat a hunk of chocolate cake, too). Anybody in LA wanna tell us when and where we can see this exhibit in November? Also how long will the exhibit be there? Does anyone know if this exhibit will also visit San Franscico while it's in California? If it's not visiting San Fran than I think by hook or crook I will try to make my way to LA, luckily I have family there and several places to rest my widdle head! ~Patti Phare-Camp ------------------------------ From: "April Vollmer" Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 11:14:22 -0400 Subject: [Baren 19430] The energy of Munakata Ray, thanks for the Munakata refresher. I've seen his work at Japan Society. It is the spontaneity that is astonishing. He is an artist who effortlessly combines faultless hanga technique with his personal vision. Never fussy or labored, he always gets just the right amount of ink and color to print his image...and the scale is truly amazing. I remember a hunt with horses and riders, wild animals and trees, grasses, it must have been 12 feet square! I think he pieced it together somehow. It seems so effortless! Josephine thanks for the story of David Stones! How lucky you were (and David, too!) to be able to meet and natter. Kitakata must be sized for Hanga and unsized for Shui-yin. Here's another Hanga mystique story - Sizing is easy using the large flat wall painter's pad (that has a bottom of fibers and a sponge between that and the handle - very inexpensive). I have a rectangular plastic food container that I use to hold the sizing and I dip the pad in the sizing and then pull it across the edge of the pan to make it hold just the right amount of warm sizing to coat the paper without dripping. I coat one side and then lay out the sheets of paper on my living room floor. When dry, I coat the other side and again lay them out to dry. Actually it isn't coating is the wrong word - the sizing soaks into the paper. Recipe for sizing - 35oz warm water, 1 package Knox gelatin, 1/4 t alum mix until gelatin is dissolved, add alum, stir - you are ready to size paper. Enjoy the mystery of hanga. It is a treat. Maybe you're too young for that one! Josephine - or whoever can answer this question - where can we purchase Silk Cut linoleum? I looked at the site, but did not see a place to purchase just that product, I'm not interested in the kit (it has those speedball inks, and since I'm an ink snob, ---- and, since I have brayers and cutters, oh never mind.) I love reading about two or more Bareners meeting. What a fantastic group this is. I just wish I'd signed up for the Hanga Fandango, it sounds like so much fun. At a better time I guess I'll have to jump back into the Hanga pot and try my luck, but this just isn't good timing right now. Plate too full, utensils too short. There's always April, do we have dates for the summit, yet? As the group will learn from her work Brenda is quite a talented artist. Charles you are not so artistically challenged, your work is excellent. Creativity is not about a fancy degree. I received 2 more packets for 14a yesterday: Charles Morgan Linda Hornberger ( hope I spelled it right as I did not check) Both were lovely, unique sets of prints and Charles yours got this comment from my postal lady. She said it was one of those pieces that if you saw it in a gallery you would stop and look and wonder how it was done. Linda she loved yours and said she wished she had it hanging in her kitchen.
