Subject: [Baren 19769] INEXPENSIVE but GOOD carving set 

The new Lee Valley catalog just arrived, and I see that they have my 
FAVORITE cheap carving tools listed -- the steel in these is laminated 
(hard on cutting edge and soft everywhere else), so they take a very good 
edge and are easy to sharpen -- the only drawback is that the steel is set 
into the wood, so after a few years of use, you'll run out of sharpening 
room and have to get more tools...  I use these all the time alongside my 
'good' tools which cost almost twice as much for each as this whole set of 
five:

Let me in, let me in, by the hair of my chinny chin chin I want to come 
in.....!!!

I, like many others got to give David his big smoochy kiss, but as the 
321st visitor to the games link pages, I am out of date with my Netscape, 
(so it says) even though my trusty little hard drive has been into 
hospital recently, but still can't open up the "links".

I want to have a look at all the fun.

I would like to put my own "funny flag" on the map that I can't even 
open....did you remember to include Australia on there, Julio?  

Beautiful sunny Perth in Western Australia is where I am....it is on the 
opposite side of the world to America!  I'd like to put it there, but 
can't open it.  I'll have another try over the weekend.

Hi 
For those of you who are sharpening challenged like I am , I found this 
service offerred by McClains in their new catalog.--Tool Sharpening , $4.00 
per tool. I may have to succumb even though I have had the best of teachers, 
and you know who you are.   Will I ever learn?!

The alternative for me  is to keep buying new tools as  Mike Lyon described 
- --Leevalley.com.
Meanwhile I keep digging away

Without doubt just about the best tools for wood block cutting, and I've 
had a lot of tools over a period of 25 yrs. Particularly in the gouges, 
it's the shape of the bowl and the bevel as much as the construction of the 
steel--a very shallow angle, making it almost like razor blades or xacto 
knives--you can use them when they are at their sharpest almost like pencils.
