No matter how well conceived the image, nor how cleverly the blocks are carved, poor printing won't communicate it... No matter what the block is like, carved or not, a great printer can make a great print (and he won't need that hammer, I don't think). That's my feeling anyway! There are many different ways to ink up a block - it requires a great deal of experience and sensitivity to produce a really fine print. And an experience printmaker could produce very different prints from the same block, using the same inks. It is the same as "Power Grip" sets that I've seen in a few other catalogues. There is also a seven tool set. Japan Woodworker carries them. They are bonded steel and hollow ground. As you say the only drawback is the short blade, which is a problem if you break the tip of your toh! I lived in St. Louis for 32 years before returning to my home state of Texas. Then in August, a trip to Canada was aborted when I discovered Deadwood, South Dakota and suddenly moved here. I've visited the Hunt Gallery; normally opens at 10:00 on weekdays. You'll love Webster University, a beautiful location and campus. For film buffs, there is usually something interesting at the Winifred Moore Auditorium there as well. Wish I could be there at the show! I have been using pigment dispersions for a long time. For binder I make a mix of 2/3 ready-made gum arabic from the art store and 1/3 glycerin from the drugstore. I buy 4 ounce screw top plastic jars, put as much pigment dispersion in as I think I will need, then add a squirt of the gum arabic mixture to make a crude watercolor. It is handy to have it in a screw top jar. I can put my carrying brushes in the jars to transfer as much color as I need to the block. I add the paste (I use methyl cellulose) to the block as needed. best, April www.aprilvollmer.com - -----Original Message----- From: Aqua4tis#aol.com [mailto:Aqua4tis#aol.com] Sent: Sunday, November 10, 2002 1:31 PM To: april#aprilvollmer.com Subject: a quaestion about guerra pigments >hi april > im considering ordering some of the water dispersed pigments from guerra >and i think i heard that you use these is that correct? if so i wanted >to find out id i need to order binder or anything else for them i want to >try using them for hanga >thanks for your time and i hope all is well with you >georga ------------------------------ From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 18:54:50 -0800 Subject: [Baren 19802] paste April, Why do you use the binder? Wouldn't the pigment and paste be enough? Does this binder of gum arabic and glycerine give you smoother more streak free color? Or does it just keep the pigment in suspension better? Why methyl celluose rather than rice paste? Does it keep better or does it work better? Does it have anything to do with humidity or temperature in NY City????? Just curious...interested printmakers want to know these things.... If we have no press I'll need to think about barens and registration methods which typically don't concern me much these days. Time to go searching through the archives methinks. TyRuS Tyrus, I think you can use the kento method for your printing, I use it a lot with oil based inks. You can make a registration board of wood or make a registration board with mat board and foam core, make the kento corners out of mat board. I have one made this way I have used for two years and it is still ok, it has not fallen apart or quit working or gotten crooked. Maria has directions for one on her website that is similar, see http://barenforum.org/encyclopedia/entries/012_07/012_07_frame.html from our own archives and see http://www.printmakingstudio.com/Studionotes/Reduction/Reduction.html and see http://www.printmakingstudio.com/Studionotes/Reduction/Reduction.html This will be lots of help.... Let us know if you need more and we will look into our notes from past stuff.
