Baren Digest Tuesday, 11 February 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2125 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "PHARE-CAMP,PATTI (HP-USA,ex1)" Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 06:23:30 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20689] RE: Baren Digest V22 #2123 Just a little note on calendars. When they have prints pasted in, they are more valuable if the prints are left in. I know some of you will want to remove them to frame and I guess that's ok if you must, but that will decrease the value of the collection. Now a perpetual calendar would be cool, one that would never become outdated...Patti P-C ------------------------------ From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Mon, 10 Feb 03 22:38:43 +0800 Subject: [Baren 20690] Re: New Year Cards To Carol Wagner, Thank you for your delightful 2003 Year of the Water Ram. If this is your first Hanga print, then well done. It is not easy doing hanga and having an edition of more than 50 in this exchange I think you and other first timers deserve "gold stars". My first hanga was an edition of 6 and even that was a struggle!! Baren is a learning forum and it is worth trying something new. I haven't been carving woodblocks for 10 years yet!!! Up until I went to Bootcamp in Sidney BC Canada in 2001 I had really only tried oils, but now the challenge of multiple, multiple colours and bigger blocks is my challenge this year, so we all have to make a start somewhere and by joining in with the Baren Exchanges you receive prints from other "woodblockers" and these are great examples on which to study ... cutting, colour combinations, design, etc and with the help of the Baren Encylopedia and the Digest you pick up hints and "how to" and sometimes try things and if they don't work for you, try something else....like the current discussion with pigment and paste mixing. It is good to have some "new kids on the block" in these exchanges. Thanks Carol W and Carole Baker. I also ordered a Sosaku 'Sumi' for fine >line- not that I am proficient in cutting those fine lines yet! Dear Carol, Congratulations on your Murisaki baren purchase! You'll LOVE the difference it makes in your printing! Quick note on 'coarse, medium, fine' barens... "fine" is NOT better than "coarse" in this case... Use coarse or medium to quickly and easily print larger color areas with a minimum of effort. Reserve the use of "fine" for printing very small areas, like thin lines or widely spaced small elements... Because the "fine" barens are 'flatter' or 'smoother', they produce less printing pressure and more drag and are not as well suited to printing large smooth color areas as are the 'medium' or 'coarse' barens. Don't forget that you can and should replace your baren cover as it becomes worn... Baren Mall carries replacement covers under the name "Bamboo Sheath" at http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/print_accessories.html for $1.90 and you should probably buy a bunch (as you'll surely ruin 2/3 of your initial attempts -- still, $6.00 for a new cover is a LOT cheaper than the price of a new baren!). The BEST baren re-covering instructions I've seen are from Dave Bull at http://woodblock.com/encyclopedia/entries/001_14/001_14_frame.html although I must admit that I soak my skins a bit longer than Dave and omit the towel wrap and warm breath blowing parts (and I use the smooth plastic handle of my scissors instead of a river rock)... And the angels we have to thank for running the Baren Mall are Barbara Mason and her assistant and boss, Dave Bull. - -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com ------------------------------ From: "PHARE-CAMP,PATTI (HP-USA,ex1)" Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 10:12:55 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20692] RE: Baren Digest V22 #2124 RE: Pillow Book, Count me in. Everybody is throwing stuff into the mix and that's healthy....thanks Rich Campbell, Joe Sheridan and others for your indepth ideas....all this stuff is great. I must admit that at first I was just thinking of ordering a stack of pre-printed forms from Japan and getting 12 people to go into this with me....I would send them each a stack of sheets for their assigned month and they would send them back for collating when completed. But you have all sent in some great ideas and the project is growing in size and complexity.....what to do ? Here are some of my personal ideas based on what you have all written: Based on participation/signup...create groups of 12 (13 per if the signup turnout is very large and we want someone to do a "cover" print for the calendar) printers that would work together as a group under the umbrella of a coordinator they select from among their 12. Each group would work independent of each other and work out it's own details as far as assigning months, theme, techniques, attach or print on the form, etc.... general communication regarding the project could be done on the forum, but details re the particulars of each calendar could be kept secret by each group till the end product is completed. There should probably be one main coordinator to pull everything/everybody together...I guess...that's me...and we should probably all agree in that each group will be turning out same size calendars (or not ?) Re...how many prints to make....here is a thought....how many calendars does each member wants to get back ? how many do we want to sell thru the barenmall ? (to benefit barenforum.org ) So...if we have 12 printers....each wants to get back 3 calendars freebie....and we want to sell 20 calendars thru the mall........that means we each have to make 56 prints to cover. Does that sounds like too many...or too few ??? Remember these would probably be smaller sized prints in the 5X7 - 8X10" range...I think. thanks..let me know what you think and keep the ideas coming...Julio Rodriguez ps...how about one group for doing a "pillow-book" calendar ? ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 15:50:55 -0600 Subject: [Baren 20694] Re: More on the Calendar Project So sorry, I cut my previous email short........re selling the calendars, understand that in part this would be like a fundraiser for barenforum.org. As you all know there are charges involved in maintaining an internet presence and keeping up domain names. These monies would go toward that and other expenses. But....what do we charge for a hand-printed calendar with 12 handcut/printed woodblock designs ???? uhmmm? Some of you may think I am crazy but I think we should keep the price as reasonable as possible to allow for maximum profits and complete sellout. As a benefitting member of barenforum.org....what would you pay for such a calendar created by your fellow baren members ? $25, $35, or $50 per calendar ? I think any price higher than that would make it cost prohibitive for many too purchase....I think. Remember....there would hopefully be at least 2, 3 or 4 calendars in the making...and available for your purchase.... (participating members who wanted to get more than their 3 free calendars could perhaps purchase more at a slight discount ????) Sorry to be making this so business like....but someone has to do it....the creative and fun part is up to you all !!!!! thanks....Julio ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 17:43:27 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20695] sheepy stuff Hi all, I went to my PO box today and there were many delightful sheep and rams awaiting me!
