Baren Digest Thursday, 27 February 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2143 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Salsbury Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 10:16:18 -0600 Subject: [Baren 20858] OZ gathering Hello All, I was wondering if the OZ committee had set the agenda yet. I may have a conflict for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the end of the gathering. One of my grandchildren thinks that is the perfect weekend for their wedding. I am sure if they had contacted me first I could have convinced them it wasn't. Some of the things I am most interested in are the trips to Lawrence to see the Baren exchange portfolios, the Nelson Atkins, and show and tell of what we are working with. I am especially interested in meeting the participants and seeing the diversity of their work. As Baren members we are all interested in wood block prints/printing, but I know there is a vast variety of interest beyond that. Can't wait to meet each and everyone of you. Different paper makers would/could make large sheets of slightly different sizes so 'chuban' and 'oban' are approximations based on the sheet size. Back in the days, japanese printmaking was not so much an art form but rather a business, an trimming off largeamounts of paper would have been economical suicide. Publishers asked artists to comeup with designs that 'fit' half & quarter sheets, etc....thus minimum trimming was required and no paper was wasted. So both sizes are correct in the technical and historical sense, me thinks. To read more about paper sizes, visit David Bull's page at: http://www.woodblock.com/encyclopedia/entries/016_01/016_01_frame.html thanks....Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: "Maria Diener (aka Arango)" Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 08:57:17 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20860] Opportunity FW: Witticisms, Criticisms and Cynicisms Please note it's a delivery only entry. By 2003 we will already have had an opportunity to review the turn of the millennium from a slight temporal distance. For this exhibition, artists are asked to create new work utilizing printmaking processes and components to observe, examine, prove, pontificate, be PC, anti-PC, or apolitical, and be all they can be. Together we will set our Palm Pilots for a date with future icons, or deconstruct those past icons we hold so reverently as part of our pictorial code. Artists will be asked to interface with the present, the future, the past, or times and dimensions unknown, and will be reminded to double-click on their sense of humor. This exhibit will present a snapshot of the combined interpretations, expressions, opinions, criticisms and observations of the participants. These artists will be charged to digitize, analyze, romanticize or commercialize the iconographic landscape we, as artists and citizens of the world, find around us today. Printmaking processes and techniques must be a central component of the production of each work in this exhibit. (Email me for directions.) On Tuesday, Matt Brown, Paulette Nejko, Sandy Wadlington and I met in the well-stuffed (barely walking room), two floor, ocean front gallery to hang the goodies. The work of those three printmakers is simply scrumptious! If we can find floor space, Matt and I plan to take turns demonstrating printing on Saturday (1-5); Paulette will be carving. I'm hoping my Exchange 15 prints arrive in time to take them along to share. Would love to see you there!
