Baren Digest Monday, 3 March 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2147 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "marilynn smih" Date: Sun, 02 Mar 2003 07:18:25 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20896] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2146 Mary Jane Boylan, welcome to Baren. You have wandered into a enthusiastic group that will get you into hanga if you have the interest. I decided last Spring that the place to start was a workshop. I have barely learned skills and not used them as much as I would like. You will find there is a lot to know about this art/craft. Of all the art forms I have been involved with hanga seems the most technical, so you will need to master a craft as well as the art. Me the novice here talking!!!! As for your letter about Japan it was a wonderful treat to read of you experiences and you did include some about art and a lot about a marvelous experience. You can go to the Baren site and join up for after 5 where wew do ramble about experiences that are non art related. I am sure we would love having you. Since I'm totally dependant on producing ptgs etc for my living I have come to accept sales of posters for my shows as well as small 'commercial' prints for people who can't afford the paintings. I've now become 'daft' enough to make many woodcuts 'to give away free' as you say even spending precious $'s on postage because I so enjoy it but you have to remember that the quality of the image comes first and can even be enjoyed in reproduction when there's no other way. Believe me tho' I do understand and appreciate what the Baren is about. I wonder if you shouldn't think of a higher price for the calendars to be if they are original prints or not charge at all to be consistent with the exchange projects and preserve the value of the prints. I know it's a mute question. regards, Louise Cass At 11:09 AM 3/1/03 -0800, you wrote: >Louise, I think you will hear a large scream from all over the country >thinking of making "high color copies" of prints.....I think all of us >would far rather sell our work for less that to have it digitally >copied........After all we are giving it away free for exchanges and for >the archives....so cheap for a calendar for sale to all our friends on >Baren who will no doubt give them as gifts to people who will appreciate >them while fattening the baren coffers is not such a bad thing! I do not like sending info regarding my VISA over the internet. I would prefer to talk 'in person" to the receiver of my number. Not that I do not trust the people receiving, I do not trust the people looking for # on the email. I have spent too many years programming computers to entirely trust them. I just wanted to warn Mary Jane "buyer beware!" The more you spend on Japanese tools, the better they will work! So the first thing to do is evaluate your commitment to printing and weigh it against your bank account. I spent a lot of money on good tools, but they have served me for many years now. Mike is unfailing in his generosity with information, but I would recommend the $40 disk baren from Daniel Smith for beginner printing if you can afford it. Also, take a class if you can find one in your area, it can save you a lot of time. And I really have nothing against digital prints as long as they are sold as reproductions or digital original work. However, I don't think too many people on baren would want to make digital copies of their prints....maybe I am alone here but I don't think so. I would rather have a calendar of original work and then save the work, I would be happy to pay a bit more for it and pleased to buy them to give as gifts...I have thought of doing it myself for friends, but can never seem to quite get it together in time.... I am probably just really slow when it is something I don't have to get done, so I guess deadlines are my friends! I certainly understand painters wanting to make more work...it takes a long time to make a print but we get many. It takes a long time to make a painting and you get one...a person can only do so much work in a year. There is no solution here, really. The problem always comes from confused gallery people, confused artists and the confused public that does not know the difference between origianl prints and reproductions. Happens all the time, even in galleries where they should know better. Wanda and I had such an experience last month....scary. One of the best galleries in the city and the owners wife did not know the difference between an original print and a poster..... Barbara ------------------------------ From: "Maria Diener (aka Arango)" Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2003 21:00:25 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20902] calendar The calendar project sounds exciting. Without any screaming and with no prejudice against reproductions of single-copy originals such as paintings, I guess I would be against the reproduction of the calendar. Perhaps only because it seems (to me) a bit silly to make prints off of prints. If, as printmakers, we are making multiples of an image, then it seems we should make as many multiples as we think we can sell. We can make as many multiple copies as we want--we are printmakers--and we can make them all as beautiful and original as the next, no ink-jet required. Are we lucky people or what?! So if we think we can sell 100 copies, let's get crankin'! :-) Maria PS Curious that even among printmakers the "multiple copy" issue varies so much. When I send prints to the Wood Engraver's Network Bundles, I send around 200, one for each member. Doesn't seem strange to print 250 engravings, while a run of 200 woodcuts does seem a bit excessive and a run of 200 moku-hanga woodblock prints...well, heck, that would be my output for the entire year! Oh, be quiet, Dave... ;-) <||><||><||><||><||><||> Maria Arango Las Vegas Nevada USA www.1000woodcuts.com <||><||><||><||><||><||> ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V22 #2147 *****************************
